Under normal circumstances, even if he didn’t stop Josiah from interrupting, he should have at least shot him a glare.
“I’m fine.” Maverick waved his hand absentmindedly, offering a vague explanation. “I’m just worried you. might overwork yourself. You’ve never worked in a corporate environment before, and you’re so headstrong. What if you exhaust yourself?”
What he said actually made a lot of sense.
With a mix of belief and doubt, Lysander nodded, choosing not to press further on the matter.

Michelle saw her still looking uneasy and tried to console her. “Lysander, don’t worry. If I graduate and you’re still not settled, I’ll come to help out!”
Only then did Lysander smile. “You should focus on healing your injuries first.”
The atmosphere seemed to have lightened as Howard watched the two siblings chat merrily. It was then that he interjected, “Indeed, health is of utmost importance. You may be young now, but if you don’t take good care of yourselves, it will be hard to make up for it when you reach our age.”
As he spoke, he exchanged looks with Molly. They both noticed the newly sprouted silver strands in cach other’s hair, Compared to Maverick and Laura, they had aged fairly well. However, at this couldn’t escape the inevitable signs of aging.
age, they
A pang of inexplicable sorrow welled up in Lysander’s heart.
Molly had just recovered from a serious illness, which made her deeply understand the importance of health. She said gently, “It’s only now that I truly realize, everything else is secondary. As long as you’re healthy and the family is together, that’s the greatest happiness.”
With teary eyes, Howard echoed his wife, “Our two families have been through so much to become one, we must spend more time together in the future.”
Lysander immediately turned toward her foster parents and sister. Seeing that they had no objections, a wave of warmth surged in her heart. Instead of being destroyed by the truth of the past, her family had grown closer.
In consideration of his daughters, Maverick finally agreed to Howard’s suggestion. “Mmm, indeed, we should get out more.”
Howard, who was of the same age group as him, spoke about current affairs with particular passion.
“We’re both at the age of retirement now, so we’ll have more free time in the future. Let’s meet up more often, consider it as a way to pass the time. Especially for me, even though I’m a bit younger than you, these past few years have truly been quite tumultuous. My wife’s health is not what it used to be, she can’t handle too much stress, so we’ll be staying at home from now on.”
As he spoke, his gaze was filled with emotion as he turned to Lysander and Josiah. “I’ve come to terms with it now. The world now belongs to the younger generation.”
Maverick’s job was entirely different from his, but when it came to age, he too showed a sense of deep reflection.

Laura thought he was reminiscing about the retirement life of his peers, feeling a touch of melancholy in his heart, yet couldn’t help but harbor a sense of envy.
“At our age, we can’t compete with the younger generation in our careers. We used to look forward to the day when they’d grow up so we could finally relax. But now that they’re busy with school or work and hardly ever home, it’s different. There’s this constant sense of emptiness.”
Upon hearing this, Susan immediately empathized and joined in the conversation. “Sigh, you have two daughters and a husband at home, at least it’s lively. Me? I’m all alone at my place. If it weren’t for those two coming back, I wouldn’t even have a neighbor.”
Had it not been for the awkward relationship between the two families due to Josiah’s incident, she would have quite liked to join them.
“My dear Mich has been spending more time at home lately, but once she graduates, Maverick and I will be the only ones left. Sometimes, when I see my old friends with their grandchildren, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy from the bottom of my heart. Even when they complain about how tiring it is to take care of the kids, I sometimes wonder if they’re just showing off.”
Howard and Molly’s home was even quieter than theirs. Upon hearing words like “grandson” or “granddaughter“, they couldn’t help but feel envious. “Indeed,” they said, “it would be wonderful if we could have a child in our home.”
The elders reached an agreement. Their conversation about having a child in the family became quite animated.
Lysander began to feel on edge, she worried that the conversation would soon circle back to her.
Josiah had made his stance clear to Susan long ago. In this lifetime, apart from remarrying Lysander, he would not consider marrying anyone else. He seemed quite composed about it, but his gaze would occasionally dart toward her direction.
Michelle happened to be seated between Lysander and Josiah, serving as a barrier. As the youngest amongst them, she listened with alertness before asking warily, “You guys aren’t planning to start pressuring me into marriage, are you? If so, I might have to make a run for it while on crutches.”
Laura chuckled. “Your sister isn’t even married yet, it’s not yet your turn. You might as well put down your crutches…
She was halfway through her speech when she quickly added, “Lysa, I’m not rushing you. It’s just that when I think about your aunt’s grandchildren, I feel it would be nice to have something to do after retirement.”
Only then did Lysander breathe a sigh of relief. She then suggested, “You know, having a pet at home could liven things up. Small animals are really adorable. I actually have a kitten at my place right now. How about I bring it over for you guys to take care of next time?”
Michelle’s eyes lit up. “A kitten! Lysander, when did you start having a cat? You’re so busy, surely you don’t have the time to take care of a kitten. How about letting me do it? I’ve been idling at home nursing my injury recently, I can definitely take good care of the kitten for you!”
It seemed as though Lysander had no objections. “So I…”
Josiah was worried that Lysander would take this opportunity to send the Ragdoll kitten back home, which would rob him of an excuse to visit. He quickly spoke up, “Actually, having a dog isn’t too bad too. Dogs

are affectionate and they can accompany your parents on their walks. Cats, on the independent and don’t really like to be close to people. Right, Lysander, don’t you still have a dog that’s being looked after at a colleague’s house? Why don’t you send the dog over for Michelle to look after?”
Michelle was pleased with the idea as well. “A puppy is fine tool”
He subtly expressed his hope that Lysander could retrieve the robe from Adrian and deliver it to his foster parents‘ home.
With this approach, not only was Adrian’s chance of getting close to Lysander under the pretense of his robe cut off, but it also provided the elders with something to do. It was a classic case of killing two birds with one stone.
Lysander clearly understood his intentions, but she merely responded with a silent smile, waiting for her foster parents to make the decision first. “Mom, Dad, do you prefer cats or dogs?”
Laura was somewhat tempted, but considering her recent situation, she replied, “We’re planning to move soon, and with the chaos of renovating and buying furniture afterward, it’s best to wait for the right time to get a pet. Otherwise, we’d have to bring it along during the move and might not be able to take care of it properly.”
“All right, take your time to think it over and let me know once you’ve decided,” Lysander said gently.
Maverick had mixed feelings as he listened to his daughter’s heartfelt words from the side.
“Actually, our conversation wasn’t meant to pressure you. Marriage is a significant matter, and we absolutely can’t be hasty about it. You mustn’t go into it blindly. It’s crucial to find someone who genuinely knows and cherishes you. Once you’ve found such a person and settled down, I’ll be at ease.”
His voice was filled with anticipation, as if he had already found the perfect candidate.
As soon as these words were spoken, the table immediately fell silent.
Aside from Maverick and Lysander, everyone else was keeping their heads down.
Especially Josiah.
He touched his nose, feeling as if a spotlight was shining on him.
It felt as if Maverick was hinting at him no matter how he interpreted it.
Knowing her full well and being wholeheartedly good to Lysander, these two conditions were simply the opposite of what Josiah was in the past.
