Chapter 55: Marcus Dressed Up, Begging for Gemma to Come Back
Marcus had just gotten home when he got the call.
He’d had a few drinks.
The stubble on his chin made him look rugged and a little worn out.
Alijah, who had just been lulled to sleep by the newly hired nanny, heard the commotion and came running out. The sight of Marcus in this state scared the little boy to tears.
The nanny quickly scooped him up and carried him away, trying to calm him down. Marcus, already irritated, turned on his heel to leave, but his phone started ringing. After hearing what Mabel had to say, his mood instantly lightened.
He thought back to the fight with Brian and the way Mr. Cassius had gotten involved.
Gemma must have felt humiliated.
Now, she was regretting it. Why else would she go to Mabel and stir up trouble?
Obviously, she wanted Mabel to pass on the message that she was sorry.
The realization lifted his spirits.
“I’ll cover the money. She’s in a bad mood, so just bear with her for now,” he said before hanging up.
He asked the assistant to transfer fifty million on the spot…
Then, he went straight to his bedroom and lay down.
With h
his mood improved, he fell asleep almost instantly.
The room was well soundproofed, so he didn’t hear Alijah’s cries at all.
“Master Alijah, you still have to go to school,” the nanny coaxed.
“Mr. Wilson’s assistant is waiting outside. Hurry up and change so you can leave.
The teachers said there’s going to be a masquerade ball soon. If you don’t go, you’ll miss it!”
Alijah’s eyes lit up at the mention of the ball
His preschool used to host similar events, and Gemma always made him the coolest masks
His classmates would envy him every time.
But Alijah felt his mom wasn’t very stylish–just a plain doctor who didn’t know anything about fun. So at those balls, he’d always hold a mask Gemma made and invite Mabel to dance instead.
After watching her win a medical technology competition, though, he realized his mom was kind of amazing in her own
way.
This time, he decided he would invite Gemma.
She’d definitely be happy and might even start spending more time with him again.
“Fine, I’ll change and go to school,” Alijah said, grabbing his kids‘ phone.
He planned to message his mom after he got there.
She’d be so surprised
Maybe she’d even rush over to pick him up.
That thought brightened his mood. He quickly got dressed and grabbed his things.
The nanny sighed in relief.
Alijah could be quite a handful, and his dressing often left his closet in chaos.
But she pretended not to notice. Once he was ready, she quietly left the room.
She wasn’t being lazy-

She knew better than to meddle in the affairs of a wealthy family.
Even small things, like how clothes were folded or whether there were lipstick marks on them, were private
In these families, the lady of the house had to handle household details herself, on top of her social obligations.
Glancing upstairs, she saw the master was still resting. On tiptoe, she slipped out to the garden to help the gardener water the plants.
Meanwhile, Gemma had no idea her scheme against Mabel had backfired, leaving Mabel teary–eyed but twenty million richer.
Right now, she was staring at Noah and Alijah, feeling stressed.
“A masquerade ball? I don’t know how to dance!”
She had once tried to learn in secret, sneaking off to a dance studio.
It was all so she could attend one of Alijah’s school balls.
Most of the dances at these events were cute and simple, often anime–themed, so they weren’t too hard to learn.
But Alijah never wanted her to go and always took Mabel instead.
Feeling her skills weren’t good enough, Gemma decided to keep practicing so she could surprise Alijah someday.
But then Alijah fell sick after one of the balls, and she got too busy to continue
It had been nearly a year since she last danced.
Noah’s eyes sparkled
“Why don’t we go as clowns? All we have to do is hop around!”
Gemma hesitated. “Won’t I embarrass you?”
Noah blinked, confused.
“Why would that be embarrassing? Everyone loves clowns!”
Gemma couldn’t explain why, but her words spilled out before she could stop herself.
“Because I’m not famous, I can’t dance, and I’m just a girl from the countryside who doesn’t know anything about luxury. We’re different”
Noah stared at her, sturmmed, before blurting out.
“What are they, pre–made people? Like those pre–made meals?”
Gemma froze.
This is the first time Gemma had heard this,
“Pre–made people?”
The term rolled off her tongue, and she laughed out loud
It was true-
People like Marcus had their lives pre–planned from birth, just like pre–packaged meals, with every ingredient measured
“You’re right. I’m a natural person, not a pre–made one. Why should I compare myself to them? Alright, we’ll go as clowns!”
Noah cheered.
“Gemma, my heart feels like it’s on a rollercoaster right now!”
Awesome!

He was thrilled to be part of a to
“What about your uncle?” Gemma asked.
The two of them turned to look at Cassius, who had been quietly listening

Caught off guard, Cassius’s usually stoic eyes twitched.
“Whatever
you want,” he said coolly.
Noah couldn’t believe it.
*Really?”
Cassius nodded. “I don’t lie.”
Noah pumped his fist in the air. “Yes!”
Since Noah had to return to the preschool on time, Gemma volunteered to handle the costume part
At school, the teacher asked if Gemma would attend the ball.
Gemma nodded. “Yes, I’ll be there.”
From a second–floor window, Alijah spotted her and was so excited he wanted to rush downstairs.
The teacher gently coaxed him.
“She’ll be back tomorrow for the ball.”
Alijah’s eyes lit up.
He had planned to message her about it, but she was already ahead of him.
Was this what people called a mother–child connection?
He was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to share the news with Marcus
Marcus was lounging on the sofa, flipping through a financial magazine when Alijah told him.
He froze mid–page, a smile creeping onto his face.
The ball was tomorrow, and the cooling–off period for the divorce ended the day after.
Gemma must be trying to make amends before it was too late.
She’d made enough of a fuss this time.
It was only fair to give her a chance.
He immediately called his stylist. “Pick me a suit for the ball. Something formal.”
Why not grab one from his closet?
Because it hadn’t been organized in a month, and it was such a mess, he couldn’t even step inside!
