Chapter 1356
Susan stood next to Lucy, disbelief etched across her face. She had ceased any attempt to stop Lucy from touching Bruce, but Lucy’s words had shocked her to the core, sending tremors through her body and draining the color from her cheeks.
Lucy wasn’t afraid of catching whatever had taken Bruce. She wasn’t afraid of dying at all. Susan had thought that once Bruce was gone, her mother would finally be free. No more walking on eggshells every day, no fear of Bruce’s infidelity, of his nights out on the town.
She had dreamed of a life where she could spread her wings with her mom, live on their own terms. Yet, her mom was declaring she wanted to join Bruce in death!
Susan didn’t look at Bruce’s lifeless body. Her gaze was fixed on her tear-streaked mother. The words that Lucy said left her reeling, pale-faced and numb.
Watching her mother weep, Susan felt a well of despair deep inside her. She had never felt loved, not truly, in this house.
Her father had been a philanderer, charming various women, playing with their hearts and pocketbooks. To him, money was the be-all and end-all.
And her mother? She only had eyes for her father. Any affection Susan received was simply because she was Bruce’s daughter.
If she didn’t carry Bruce’s blood, Susan doubted Lucy would care at all.
Her childhood was a cacophony of endless quarrels. She was sick of it; their fights sent her trembling, locking herself away in her room.
But they never cared. Beyond their own squabbles, Susan was an afterthought.
Each time she shut herself away because of their fights, it was she who had to soothe her own discomfort and fear.
As she grew, their apparent concern was a facade. They just wanted her to be a money-making machine, to charm wealthy men and to line their pockets. They had never truly cared for her.
The incident with the two hundred and fifteen thousand was a case in point.
They were quick to gamble it away in the stock market, never sparing a thought for how hard she’d worked for it, or what she had endured to get it.
When she came home that day, exhausted and downcast, they didn’t notice at tall. They just wanted the money, and when they got it, they rushed to invest it.
And when that money-earned through her own sacrifices-was lost, they didn’t reflect. They just became more greedy, more desperate to push her towards Lysander’s bed.

Only by securing Lysander would they have a never-ending stream of wealth.
They claimed to love her, but their love was actually for themselves
Bruce loved money and himself, while Lucy loved Bruce and money
What was Susan but a sacrifice for their family’s altar?
Watching Lucy hold Bruce’s face, sobbing as if her heart was breaking, Susan clenched her fists so tightly that her whole body shook her lips turning a ghostly white
Despair, coldness, anger, and loathing filled her
With a trembling voice, Susan spoke, “Mom, this is the last time I’ll call you that. Do
