Yvette had finally asked Jeremiah about it. He said, “You’ve been going to Lane Mansion since you were young, Yvvy. Have you ever heard about the Lanes having twins?” She shook her head. If she’d known that Xavier had a twin brother, she would’ve definitely wondered if she’d loved the wrong person before.
However, despite visiting the Lanes multiple times after coming to Tirion, she had never heard that Xavier had a twin brother. No one outside the family had talked about it either.
“That’s because I was diagnosed with a terrible sickness when I was born. I couldn’t get too cold, and I couldn’t be exposed to the harsh sunlight.
“I spent most of my childhood in the ICU, and no one in my family thought I would survive. So, they never told the world about my existence. I only returned to Lane Mansion when my condition improved. “However, I was still too weak, so I almost had no contact with the outside world. Of course, you were the only exception.”
He continued explaining, “I told you I was Xavier because I was worried you might be disgusted by my sickness. The Lanes wouldn’t have wanted someone as useless as me to appear in public as well.” As Yvette listened to him, she finally understood his pain.
“I’m sorry for not knowing all of this. I wasn’t avoiding you or acting like I didn’t know you on purpose. I just didn’t know how I should face you or what I should say at all.
“I’ve always remembered how you helped me and stayed by my side when we were younger. I remember everything.”
As she spoke, her eyes became redder, and the tears started streaming down her face uncontrollably.
She suddenly felt like the villain. Those reasons were why she’d become distant from the man who used to treat her well.
Jeremiah lifted his hand to wipe her tears away, but she instinctively avoided him. His hand froze in midair. “Yvvy, do you still remember our promise?”
She looked up at him.
“You promised you’d marry me when I returned. Do you still remember that?” he asked slowly.
Yvette’s body tensed up slightly, and
her face became pale. Back then she’d gotten stabbed when she’d saved him. He’d held her tightly and said, “Wait for me. When I return, we’ll get married.”
She still had the scar on her back. That promise was the reason she’d married Xavier without any hesitation. However, it had all turned out to be a huge mistake.
“You know I’m married.” She felt
ashamed and clenched her fists so
tightly that her nails dug into her palm “Besides, you’re getting engaged as well. So, let’s forget
about our promise.”
Jeremiah’s heart skipped a beat, and he said, “As long as you’re willing to do it, I can call off the engagement right away.”
His intentions were clear. He’d agreed to marry Zoey because of Shannon. He’d also wanted to see how Yvette would react. At that moment, he wanted her to make a choice.
When she heard that, she rejected his idea without a second thought. “I’m sorry.”
Even if she got divorced from Xavier, she’d never marry Jeremiah.
She wasn’t the same Yvette from before anymore. Now, she had Noah and Zachary, not to mention the baby in her womb. She didn’t think she was worthy of being with Jeremiah anymore.
Jeremiah hadn’t expected her to
reject his idea so quickly. He wasn’t
ready to give up. “Yvvy, is there
anything else you’re worried about? I can deal with Xavier and force him to divorce you. Then, I’ll get someone to take care of him.”
Seeing how Yvette wasn’t reacting, he smiled bitterly. “If it hadn’t been for him, you would’ve married me instead.”
If he’d returned during the first three years of her marriage with Xavier, she would’ve agreed to his suggestion without any hesitation.
However, everything had changed, and all she could do was apologize. “I’m sorry.”
She opened the door, ready to leave. Suddenly, Jeremiah pulled her into his embrace.
