Chapter 904 Living off His Wife
“Has it been four months already?”
As expected.
The next night, during the celebration banquet, Emelie shocked everyone when she revealed that she was already pregnant while politely declining to join in the toast.
This was even more surprising than the news of William’s successful surgery.
The truth was only Emelie, Mona, and Ashley were unaware of William’s surgery. Elias was left out on purpose because everyone knew him too well.
If Elias knew, Ashley would definitely find out. And Elias never kept secrets from Ashley. Once Ashley knew, how could Emelie not know?
However, apart from her two close friends, no one else knew that Emelie was pregnant.
The most stunned was Elias.
“Honey, you kept a secret from me?”
Ashley pretended not to hear him.
For the rest of the meal, Elias remained sulky and was stuck in his own thoughts.
Ashley had kept a secret from him. His honey had actually kept a secret from him. How could she have had a secret that she didn’t tell him?
No one bothered to comfort him.
Next in line were the two moms.
Yennifer thought that she had done a great job helping William keep the surgery a secret from Emelie. But then Emelie had gone ahead and kept her pregnancy a secret from all of them.
When they realized that she had been juggling her early pregnancy with her year-end work and two major cases, the moms felt nothing but heartache.
Yennifer immediately called for the waiter. “Waiter! Please bring a few more dishes. I’d like a lemon poached sole with herbs, some beef and cabbage roll-ups, some hearty pork ribs, and a root vegetable stew, along with some pumpkin gratin with gruyère and Lobster Thermidor!”
These were all dishes perfect for pregnancy. They were all full of calcium, iron, and vitamins.
She had recently seen a menu for pregnant women when her friend’s daughter had become pregnant.
Greta, meanwhile, quickly moved the dishes that weren’t suitable for Emelie further away.
Emelie, who was resting her head on William’s shoulder, was touched by her mother’s care, but she also couldn’t help laughing. She felt that keeping her pregnancy a secret had been the right decision.
If she had announced it earlier, it would have thrown her off her rhythm.
She wasn’t someone who liked having her plans disrupted.
Then again, this child didn’t really count as an unplanned surprise.
She and William hadn’t used any protection since before the wedding.
In the past year of their marriage, she had been flying to Mercianna almost every week except for the last four months. Whenever there wasn’t work that required her presence at Cloudex Corporation, she stayed in Mercianna. She had stronger feelings for the Filo Group luxury line, which she had built from the ground up.
As Mona put it, Filo Group was her true princess, while Cloudex Corporation, even though it was also hers, was more like a lesser child. After Xanther Group officially declared bankruptcy, Cloudex Corporation was severely
weakened. But even then, its foundations remained solid as it wasn’t really a small company.
Moreover, Greta had settled in Mercianna and was now with Ashlyn.
With most of the people and things she cared about in Mercianna, it was only natural that Emelie frequently traveled there. Her married life with William wasn’t lacking. She had mentally prepared herself for the possibility of pregnancy.
So, when she started feeling nauseous even at the sight of prawns and felt constantly tired and sleepy, she thought she might be pregnant. A quick test confirmed it.
Neither Emelie nor William had any bad habits, and neither of them smoked or drank.
William had rarely smoked even before his illness, and since his surgery, he had quit entirely. They had also consulted a doctor, who confirmed that William’s condition wouldn’t be passed on to their children. Hence, this baby would definitely be healthy. Emelie’s regular check-ups had already confirmed that.
Jayden also brought his wife along. Yelena was deeply impressed. Emelie was managing two major companies and handling two large cases, yet she hadn’t missed a single prenatal check-up. Her life was so well-organized.
Like attracts like, and people with similar traits were drawn to each other.
Yelena admired strong, independent women. Thus, she went over to bond with Emelie.
Jayden was speechless.
He was worried that his wife would turn into Ms. Thornton 2.0. If she became Emelie’s friend, she might start putting Emelie first, making him Elias 2.0. Thus, he quickly pulled his wife back and put an end to the bonding. It wasn’t just men Emelie attracted. She also attracted women.
Lyle said, “You should probably hire a few more secretaries and assistants. They could help you lighten the load. You’re too busy.”
They were seated around a large table, and Lyle, sitting directly across from Emelie, propped his chin on one hand while tapping a porcelain bowl with his utensils. “Or you could promote a few people.”
Yennifer thought that made sense. “Work is never-ending. If you ask me, you should hire a few professional managers to run the company, then you can just relax and enjoy life. You only get 30 thousand days in life. Don’t be like Wesley, who’s probably spent at least 20 thousand of them working.”
William squeezed Emelie’s hand and raised an eyebrow at her with a smile. Even his mom was suggesting it.
He had already proposed this idea to Emelie. He had no ambitions left when it came to work or the company and was quite happy living off his wife.
He was genuinely living off her at this point.
All his assets were under Emelie’s name. Even the house he lived in in Mercianna, the Denning Residence, was hers.
It had been a year since he had last touched any paperwork.
Emelie looked back at William helplessly.
Some people in this world were just born to love work, or more specifically, the sense of achievement it brought. Watching her assets grow brought her joy.
She couldn’t just be a hands-off boss.
And besides, she didn’t trust anyone else to fully manage such a large company.
“I already have Mona at Cloudex Corporation and Jodie at Filo Group, which is enough. But I do plan to promote Ashton to VP and Fabian to COO. They can help me with the workload, and that should be enough.”
Ashton was already the CFO of Cloudex Corporation, and now with the added role of VP, it showed just how much Emelie valued and trusted her.
Emelie didn’t want to stay the center of attention for too long, so she quickly changed the subject by asking Greta,
“Mom, are you going back to Mercianna?”
Greta smiled. “Our original plan was to spend a month in Sentiland, watching the snow melt and the grass turn green. But with you pregnant, we’ll have to reconsider.”
Thanks to their daughters, Greta and Yennifer had become close friends.
Yennifer often took Greta around Faldoria, attending fashion shows and banquets together.
“What’s there to reconsider? Go ahead and stick to your plans. I’ll be fine.” Emelie found their concern amusing.” Where else are you planning to go?”
Yennifer said, “We might also go to Thalassa. After Sentiland, we’ll see how tired we are. Thalassa is interesting, too. We’re thinking of experiencing Ravenport’s culture and maybe even taking a hot air balloon ride.” “Thalassa is famous for its jewelry,” Emelie remarked. She recalled how she had been there for work a few years ago but never got to explore. A hot air balloon ride sounded like fun.
She continued asking the moms about their travel plans.
William, watching her excitement, seemed lost in thought for a moment before pulling Jayden aside for a chat
outside.
Lyle glanced outside and saw Jayden laughing so hard he could hardly breathe, with his hand resting on William’s shoulder. He thought about going out to see what they were discussing but then decided against it.
After all, he was the only single person there.
