The moment Brooke entered the shop, I knew she was trouble. I had no idea if she was among the ones sent by Draco to find us, but I wasn’t taking chances.
She belonged to his pack and was part of his Delta’s Shield-the top security squad of a pack.
Brooke also attended the Alpha Academy as she belonged to an affluent family. I was sure Draco had been ignoring her existence until she hooked up with me, and the next thing I knew, he was fucking her too.
So, I cut off all ties with her, and he eventually moved on from her as well. It only went to show that Draco had an obsession with taking females from my arms-whether I was serious with them or not.
I knew this was the reason he was after Adessa.
I discreetly removed my ring, not wanting Brooke to associate me with my wife in case she was sent to track us.
Like I believed it would happen, she showed interest in me, whether ordered by Draco or she was simply flirting.
I heard the door to the restroom open, and my heart stopped. I didn’t want Adessa to approach me.
She didn’t, but I saw her expression whenever I glanced at her when Brooke wasn’t looking. She was upset. As much as I wanted to think she was jealous, I couldn’t focus on it. I had more things to think of at the moment. I paid attention to the surroundings, wanting to check if Brooke was alone.
And then Adessa left the shop. I almost grabbed her back, but I was able to restrain myself.
Brooke kept talking to me. I had no idea how I managed to converse with her, pay for the chips that I grabbed along the way, and simultaneously check on Adessa.
As soon as she was seated inside, I locked the car door using my keys and prayed to the Goddess that no one came for her. I was ready to bolt out if I saw movement anywhere near her, but everything was quiet outside. However, I already knew the moment I left the shop and walked to the car that there were eyes watching me.
My hunch was confirmed when I saw Brooke get inside a car. Once her car door was opened, the light turned on, giving me a glimpse of two men inside. I saw them nodding their heads as if they were a confirmation of something.
So I knew we needed to get away.
I drove fast, but they also sped up.
I was sure these men had weapons, but I would bet that Draco wanted Adessa alive and not dead. Draco never cared about anyone, not even his brother. I didn’t think he was affected by his death. He was only using him as an excuse to terrify Adessa and to show superiority over me.
I hope I was right that he wanted her alive. So, as long as they couldn’t point the gun at her to threaten her, we were still at an advantage. I only had to make sure they couldn’t come close to us.
The view of the city blurred as I swiveled through the traffic, trying to distance my car from the two black vehicles tailing us.
Loud honks and tires screeching against the asphalt filled the air as I swerved on the lines, nearly cutting off a van. It almost landed on the dike if the driver was not able to control his car. “Fuck!” I growled.
This chase had to end.
Soon, I would not be able to outrun them without harming innocent people.
I stepped on the gas again as my clutch on the wheel tightened. I abruptly turned to the left, and I ended up on a rural road with fields of rice or wheat on both sides. There were no houses around-a perfect place for crimes.
My eyes shifted between the rearview mirror and the flashing neon arch sign of a bridge ahead. It was still too small, which meant we were still many meters away. “If they come closer, you need to shoot their tires,” I told Adessa.
“Kael, I’m not sure I can. I killed two already.”
My hand cupped the back of her head, and our eyes met. I pushed her face toward me and kissed her forehead in a swift motion.
I could see the tears brimming in her eyes, and I did my best not to show her any emotion, but I knew I could not let her go through the same torture again. But someone had to do it.
“Jump at the back. Stay on the floor behind me. On my mark, open the window and shoot.” I said. I needed to distract her.
“What if they shoot us?”
“They won’t,” I answered as if I knew what they were thinking.
Adessa crawled toward the back of my seat, taking one gun with her while I grabbed the other and placed it on her vacated seat. She was on the floor but was looking out at the back window from time to time.
I saw one of the two cars speeding up.
I moved to the left side of the road, and I could already see the faster car approaching the right side.
“Duck and rise on my signal!” I shouted, wanting to make sure she could hear me despite the sounds of the roaring engine. “Aaah!” Adessa shrieked as the car behind us bumped my rear.
A growl ripped from my throat as I fought hard to control the wheel. The thought of Adessa holding a gun and that she could have fired it at herself at the impact pushed me tomy limit.
I glanced again at the rearview mirror. The second car was too far away, and saw the one behind us speeding up, gearing for another, bump. hastily swerved to the far right and slightly loosened my foot on the gas, making the car catch up and drive at the same range as us.
And everything after that felt like slow motion.
I pressed the window button on the passenger side, and it rolled down as my hand grabbed the gun and raised it. With a steady pulse that had mastered over the years, three consecutive shots rang out in the air, making Adessa scream louder.
One shot on the driver’s neck and the next two at the back where the gas tank was.
It sent their vehicle swerving violently, nearly hitting my car, but I was able to escape the impact as I sped up.
In a split second, Adessa’s screams were drowned out by a big explosion of two black cars colliding and flying behind us as we made it to the next exit.
