“Do you, Henry, take Violet as your lifelong partner, loving her without conditions, through prosperity and adversity, health and illness, happiness and sorrow, pledging unwavering fidelity till the end of days?”
Henry, locking eyes with the enchanting woman before him, declared with heartfelt sincerity, “I do.”
In my dim prison cell, having completed the labor that my cellmate was assigned to, I seized a rare moment to watch TV in the prison’s common area. There, on the screen, was the unmistakable face of Henry Patterson.
Intently, I watched. Henry, in his immaculate black suit, stood tall and distinguished. Up close, his striking features were undeniably handsome. That day, his visage was illuminated with sheer joy–for he had wed Violet Blue, the woman he cherished most.
Meanwhile, what about me, Henry’s former spouse? Shortly after my incarceration, which Henry orchestrated. I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Now, I endured the brutal reality of this bleak, unforgiving prison.
Laughter erupted from me, tinged with irony, “Henry, oh Henry, you’ve achieved what you wanted.”
My raucous laughter roused the prison boss from her sleep. Wordlessly, she hauled me into a blind spot, out of camera view, where she and her lackeys unleashed their fury on me through a vicious beating.
The prison air was thick with the acrid smell of blood–a stench I never grew accustomed to.
Why… Why is this happening to me…” Their blows and kicks were the brutal reply to my unanswered query, a query whose response Henry would never provide.
Teetering on death’s edge, yet why was I still subject to such cruelty?
Agonizing pain wracked my body, prompting a reflexive curling into a fetal position, yearning for protection like a hedgehog.
Cough!
It felt like something within my chest was clamoring for escape. Overcome by violent coughing, the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth, followed by a copious outpour of blood.
The pain was excruciating, akin to thousands of knives twisting inside me, particularly in my che dub blurring my vision with agony.
“Why… are you all doing this to me!”
In that instant, I desperately wished my hatred, could morph into a lethal blade to vanquish all my
tormentors.
“Given
your limited time left, I’ll let you in on a secret one of the prisoners jeered mockingly, her eyes reflecting a blend of scorn and pity. “A well–dressed man, clearly high–class, paid us off. He wanted to ensure your prison stay was anything but easy. We’re all women here; I didn’t want to be harsh,

considering your cancer. But his offer was too tempting. He even promised our children jobs at Patterson Corporation”
“Patterson… Corporation.” I bit down fiercely on my tongue, fighting to maintain consciousness a bit longer. Who else from Patterson Corporation would target me, if not Henry and Violet?
I had been the one who stubbornly refused divorce, exposing Violet as the mistress and triggering a storm of online vitriol against her.
Yet my actions were limited to just that; I hadn’t even met Violet in person before Henry made his ruthless move. He decimated my parents‘ lives, usurping the company my father built from scratch, and ultimately orchestrated my imprisonment.
In hindsight, my love for Henry was a fool’s errand.

corner, my body marred with bruises and cuts.
“Is she dead?” the leader queried, peering into my unblinking eyes.
Then, she leaned down, her fingers closing my eyes. She sighed, tinged with remorse, “Don’t blame us. The temptation was too great to resist.”
Oh Henry, my love for you spanned a lifetime, only to culminate in this tragedy.
A bitter sensation pricked my nose, and I wished I’d never fallen for him.
How I yearned for a second chance… I would never love such a man again.
Lost in these thoughts, suddenly, an intense force enveloped me, plunging everything into darkness.
“Ramona Xander! Enough with your tricks!” A stern voice jolted me awake, leaving me bewildered. Since when did men roam the women’s prison?
The smell of disinfectant suggested I was in the prison infirmary, not yet killed by inmates. Slowly, my eyes opened to a stark white ceiling, and surprisingly, there was Henry.
This wasn’t the prison infirmary, was it outside?
Confusion and resentment filled me at the sight of Henry. After all he’d done–my parents‘ deaths, my imprisonment–how could he be here, unrepentant?
His words were cold and merciless, “Even in death, I wouldn’t care for you. Die away from me.”
His gaze met mine, full of resentment. His words echoed a memory, though I couldn’t grasp the situation. All I knew was I didn’t want him near.
“Get out!” I demanded, eyes locked with his.
Shock and confusion flickered in Henry’s annoyed eyes, perhaps at my defiance. After a moment, he snorted disdainfully and left.

medical parole seemed impossible. Why was I in an outside hospital, and why had Henry come?
I reached for the phone beside my bed. Before even locking it, the date on the screen stunned me.
According to my calculations, it was my fifth year being married to Henry!
Battling a throbbing headache, I strained to piece together my memories. I found myself in a hospital, apparently due to a car crash 1 had orchestrated, hoping to make Henry, my husband, spend more time at home.
Our marriage, born out of business convenience, had bound me to the man I had loved for years. Yet, he harbored no love for me, seeing me as a nuisance
In the days to come, he was destined to meet his true love, have me imprisoned, covertly orchestrate my parents‘ demise, absorb my family’s company, and abandon me to die in prison…
In a moment of clarity. I smacked my head with my cell phone, the sharp pain confirming this wasn’t a dream.
The harrowing experiences in prison couldn’t have been a mere dream as such profound pain and regret couldn’t be fabricated.
It seemed as though I had been given a second chance at life!
Shortly after, several doctors entered my private hospital room. My eyes fell upon Henry’s somber expression, and I pondered why I had ever been so enamored with him.
This was a question I mulled over frequently during my imprisonment. As a cherished heiress, raised in the lap of luxury, why had I entangled myself with Henry?
Was it possible that I had never truly experienced love? That wasn’t the case; my parents adored me. my friends valued me, and I wasn’t short of admirers.
Yet, inexplicably, I had chosen to love a man who would inevitably lead me to prison.
“From now on, Henry, my love for you is dead,” I declared inwardly. “And the suffering you once inflicted upon me, I shall gradually repay to you and Violet.”
