Chapter 29
He instinctively grabbed her hand.
“Not angry anymore?” she asked, surprised.
“Do you want some ice cream?” he asked.
Her eyes lit up. “Sure, I was just craving some.”
She ate a big bowl of ice cream and felt really happy, even forgetting her discomfort. But by evening, her temperature suddenly spiked, and her forehead was burning hot. Wrapped in a blanket, she still felt cold. She frantically searched the medicine cabinet for some fever medicine, but everything was expired. She quickly asked Hazel to buy some.
Soon, Hazel brought back the medicine and hurried to Ella’s room, where Jaden saw her.
“What’s that?” Jaden asked.
THE
“Ms. Willow has a fever. This is fever medicine,” Hazel replied.
Jaden quickly glanced at it and realized it wasn’t suitable for
pregnant women.
He frowned slightly and took it from her. “I’ll give it to her.”
“Do you know how to eat it?” Hazel asked.
“Yes.” Jaden nodded.
Hazel had observed Jaden for a long time and felt he wasn’t completely clueless. He was very clean, spent his time reading or tinkering with electronics, and followed instructions well. He just had a simple mindset, like a teenager.
Thinking this might be a good opportunity for the couple to bond, she handed him the medicine after explaining the dosage and let him go in. After he went in, Jaden immediately ordered Eric to buy fever medicine specifically for pregnant women. Eric left, but took a long time to return. Jaden looked at Ella, who was curled up in a ball, feeling conflicted.
“Is the medicine here yet?” Ella asked.
Jaden touched her forehead, finding it very hot. Using a thermometer, he saw her temperature was 102.2°F. He knew she must be feeling awful.
“Not yet, just wait a bit longer,” Jaden said.
“I… I feel so bad… Can you get me another blanket? I’m so cold!” She was sweating and shivering at the same time. Jaden brought her another blanket, and she wrapped herself up like a cocoon.
She kept shivering. Jaden poured her some water and stayed by her side.
“Can… can I hug you?” she asked, her dark eyes big and watery, like a helpless little animal.
He stiffened at her request. Before he could respond, she took his silence as agreement, pulled him onto the bed, and hugged him tightly.
“Ella!” he exclaimed, his voice more stern than usual.
She mumbled, holding onto him with all her strength. Though weak from her illness, she refused to let go. He could have easily pulled away, but when he saw the tears in the corners of her eyes, he inexplicably stopped.
She pulled him under the blankets. As they lay there, she started to fidget, making him tense up.
“You’re so warm!” she said, clinging to him like he was a human heater.
Ella’s flushed cheek rested against his chest, and she could hear his thunderous heartbeat.
“Boy, your heart is beating so fast…” she mumbled with her eyes closed. “It sounds like a drum, kinda nice.”
“Let go of me!” Jaden demanded.
“No way, hugging you makes me feel better. Maybe I won’t need medicine after all. When I was little and got sick, my mom would hold me like this. After they were gone, no one held me or comforted me anymore. Last time you were sick, I held you for a long time, too, It’s only fair if you hug me now,” She chattered on, despite her fever, not even pausing for breath.
Jaden felt a wave of helplessness. Typically, other girls would have been more mindful of boundaries, but Ella was remarkably laid–back and never paid attention to such things.
At least she didn’t ask for anything more, just clung to him like an octopus. Soon, she fell asleep.

Chapter 29
He wanted to leave, but as soon as he moved, she clung tighter. Her scent filled his nose, making his ears turn slightly red.
He would never think of Ella that way; he found it repulsive.
Eric knocked on the door, but Jaden couldn’t get up to answer. He touched Ella’s forehead; it wasn’t as hot, showing signs of the fever breaking. It was best if she didn’t take any medicine while pregnant.
Thinking about it, he realized how tough it was for pregnant women. Ella clearly wasn’t used to hardship; she was a pampered rich girl.
For some reason, he felt a bit of pity for her. His fingers unconsciously traced her face, which was red like an apple, warm and soft with a hint of baby fat–perfect for pinching.
He found himself playing with her cheeks, unable to resist. Time passed without him noticing.
lla woke up, drenched in sweat, finally feeling better. She opened her eyes to see the bright sun shining outside. She realized she was sprawled over a warm, soft surface.
Propping herself up, she saw Jaden lying beside her. His handsome face, with its smooth skin. He looked so peaceful in his sleep.
Feeling playful, she gently traced her fingers over his sharp brows, long lashes, and high nose. Finally, her fingers reached his soft lips. They looked so tempting that she couldn’t resist poking them. Suddenly, his mouth opened, and he bit down on her fingertip.
She could feel the wet, soft texture of his tongue swirling around her finger, and she froze.
Jaden woke up at the same moment, feeling something in his mouth. Instinctively, he bit and licked it before realizing something was off. He opened his clear eyes and met Ella’s gaze.
Her fever was gone, but her face turned bright red. She scrambled off the bed, falling in the process.
“Uh hi there. Thanks for taking care of me yesterday. I’m feeling better now. I’ll go take a shower and change.” She stumbled out of the room.
Jaden frowned slightly. He wondered if she was embarrassed. “That’s ridiculous. Could someone as shameless as her feel embarrassed? She seems the type to be unfazed by anything,‘ thought Jaden.
After a hot shower, Ella emerged to find Jaden had left, and she sighed in relief. She went out, first stopping by the maternity hospital as usual to get a fake ultrasound report showing she was eleven weeks pregnant, then heading to the nursing home.
Seeing her grandpa’s improvement over the week brought her joy. He could breathe on his own and only needed the oxygen mask at night. During the day, he was more conscious.
When he saw Ella, he became visibly excited, his lips moving as he tried to speak, though only managing to produce muffled sounds.
Ella talked to him for a long time, telling him the company was doing well, she had secured several big deals, and her relationship with Harry was good.

“He’s just too busy to visit. He took over Rhys Group and is swamped with work. Grandpa, you were right about him. He’s someone I can rely on.” Talking about Harry made her feel awkward.
Her grandpa’s health had just started to improve and wasn’t stable yet. If he knew she had chosen the wrong person and that Harry had caused her so much pain, it would crush him.
