Chapter 80

FREDA WHITLOCK

Dear goddess…

I was on the verge of losing it. The head guard started to walk away and I raced after him. “He came to see me. I told him where I am. I didn’t expect him to come all the way to the pack territory and that’s why I wasn’t with him. He came to see me,” I said and he glanced at me before looking away as he stated walking again.

What?

My blood began to boil. “Hey! I’m talking to you. You have absolutely no grounds to be holding him. He is my friend. He came to see me.” I fumed and he turned around to look at me. “I’m sorry, ma’am. We have strict orders and those orders are what help us protect the pack. They are human. They came here without a werewolf chaperone and he was driving unsupervised. They could have been sent here to harm us,” he said and I let out a tired groan, wondering why he kept using ‘they’ pronouns. “But I’m telling you he came to see me. He surprised me. He means no harm,” I pleaded.

“Rules are rules, ma’am. You have to excuse me,” he stated mechanically, attempting to walk away again. My blood boiled hotter. “Excuse me, you are not excused. I demand you release him now!” I yelled and people around looked at both of us, especially me like I was crazy.

Maybe I was. Just a little bit. This whole thing was driving me

nuts.

“It doesn’t even make sense to hold him hostage. That makes humans aware and wary of the Werewolves,” I growled. He looked at me with boredom. “You can’t come in here and make demands. There is a due process to be followed,” he said, just confirming what I had been fearing.

“What do you mean?” I asked carefully and he sighed before turning fully to me and then crossing his hands with a tired look on his face. “We cannot release them except the Alpha sees them and determines they are not dangerous,” he said and I resisted the urge to pull my hair and scream,

What the hell? What on f**g earth?

“We have contacted him since the man arrived here two hours ago. He is busy and can not come to us. In your situation, you will either have to wait, or get a letter of permission from the Alpha himself,” he said and I saw what seemed to be the hint of a smirk touch his face.

I clenched my hands into fists furiously and said nothing in return. Cole had been here for two hours, locked up and facing whatever questioning or s**t was going on down there. I did not know whether to be embarrassed or furious or disappointed in our pack system. Maybe I was all three.

I said nothing as I stormed out of the building and into my car.

I hated this. I hated that I was going to have to ask Kaiden to free Cole and then Kaiden was going to find out about him. As much as possible, I had been hoping that I would be able to -keep Cole out of the mess of my life, but here he was, already

sinking into the worsts parts of it.

I started my car and clenched my hands around the steering wheel, hoping it would alleviate my fury and I would not break the material in the process. I drove out of the parking space and headed for the pack house.

I arrived within five minutes at the illegal speed I was driving. Driving that fast helped calm my anger just a bit. I needed to get Cole out of there as soon as possible and if it meant swallowing my pride, I was going to have to do it.

I walked into the pack house and headed for Kaiden’s office. I knocked and he permitted me to enter.

He looked up from the paperwork he was doing and I could tell he was surprised to see me. In fact, I was the last person he had expected to see. I could tell that much from his expression. A small smile broke out on his face and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. He dropped his pen and was about to speak but I beat him to it. “I need you to do something for me,” I said and he pressed his lips together as he looked at me thoughtfully.

“What might that be?” He asked and I took a deep breath as I structured the words I was going to tell him in my head.

“I have a problem. Someone came all the way from where I was living in another state to see me. Well he tried to surprise me but he came to the pack territory. I did not know about it. I was not expecting him to come so far The guards have him in the dungeon at the pack boundary and they need your permission before they let him go,” I rushed my words and I was almost breathless by the time I finished talking.

“It’s a he, huh?” He said and resisted the urge to smash my fist

him his face. That was not the d**n point. Cole needed to get out of there!

“Is he your boyfriend?” He blatantly asked and I was slapped across the face with both embarrassment and shock at his audacity. “What??” My voice was shrill.

“You heard me. Is he your boyfriend?” He asked, leaning back in his seat, clearly enjoying my discomfort. “That’s not the issue here, Kaiden and it sure as hell isn’t your business. I need to get him out of there.” I said through clenched teeth.

He looked down at his papers. “I can’t release him until I determine whether he is dangerous or not…” I was about to interrupt and tell him that Cole wasn’t, or at least he didn’t seem to be but Kaiden raised his hand and spoke the next words. “By myself. I need to make that determination by myself. Humans can’t walk around our pack territory and definitely not unsupervised.” He said.

“He is going to be supervised. This is my fault. I should have known he’ll come the whole way to see me. Can you please pin this on me and not on my friend?” I asked with exhaustion, wondering why everyone was deciding to give me such a hard time.

THE

“Oh he’s just your friend, huh?” He asked with a small smile, leaning forward and clasping his hands together with interest. I rolled my eyes and for the second time wanted to yell that that was not the point.
