Maeve stood there and watched Gaby with a look that said, “Let’s see how you’ll handle this.”
Wendy and the others hadn’t gotten a satisfactory answer from her earlier, so they had to turn to Gaby.

such blatant favoritism would unsettle anyone.

“All of us do!” Dorothy and Cathy led the charge, with the other trainees echoing their discontent. “Gaby, we’re all trainees. Why is Maeve the only one that gets treated specially?”
