Chapter 66
A conversation overdue
Walking around in my boyfriend’s clothes was an awkward experience but this was a conversation I couldn’t
pur off any longer. Dad was given a room at the lecturer’s tower. It was tucked near the forest, far from McGregor Academy.
All the lecturers were busy so the place was abandoned. Except for a sharp feminine voice. I stopped and stared at the partly open door.
“When are you leaving?” Headmistress Athena snapped.
“When I catch the wolf. I’m not going to leave it to roam free,” Dad replied.
My heart slammed forward. I inched closer.
“Are you insane! When they find out you’re here there will be chaos!”

“When they do find out I’m here they’ll be anxious about what they did not about my presence.”
“You’re not thinking about your daughter.”
“I’m always thinking about Gabriella. I wanted her to be safe instead she mates a shifter. An Alpha too.”
“Well, what did you expect?”
“I didn’t think it through okay?”
Athena sighed heavily. “If you’re always thinking about her, why doesn’t she know the truth?”
“Because the truth’s too heavy Athena even for me. I can’t imagine how she’ll take it. Now that I’m with her… I have no choice.”
I backed up. The truth about why he left? I always knew Athena knew more than she let on about me, but what could it be? I should have stormed in there and demanded the truth though anxiety grabbed a hold of me and ordered me to run and that was exactly what I did.
Kade was preparing for his battle and the Alpha castle felt dark and imposing. I ran to the omega quarters and burst into my old room. Emery grabbed a shirt from Blair but she snatched it back and tossed it in a suitcase.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Gabbie! You’re okay.” Emery sighed with relief. She placed a hand over her heart and stared at Blair. “Blair’s leaving.”
I gasped. “As in for the end of the term?”
Blair folded a pair of pants in a large black suitcase. “No, for good.”
The suitcase was half full. I eved the picture frames, Hair brushes, shoes and clothes..

“Did Alex-”
“We broke up.”
My eyes turned to saucers. “What!”

“Don’t sound so surprised! We weren’t in love and the whole Harlow situation made me realize I don’t want to waste my time. I know who I’m fated to…” she let out a shaky breath.
“I’m sorry I guess. Well, you put me through shit for a guy you didn’t love!”
She growled. “I wasn’t thinking about love I was thinking about another woman overstepping her territory.
“You think Harlow’s in love with Kade?”
“I don’t know… Harlow’s in love with power and I’m scared she could hurt Ivan.”
“Ivan…” the dick who left us and allowed Harlow and Baxter to grab me.
1s he-”
“Yes, yes! We’re fated and I didn’t know.” She cupped her face.
“Does Alex know?”
She dropped her hands and shot daggers at me. “You’re dead if you tell him.”
Same old Leiah.
“I mean…. we’re cool but I don’t want him to know especially since Ivan might lose his title or worse.”
“Is Harlow really that strong?”
A gong sounded in the distance. It snatched our attention. It sounded again after several seconds. Leiah stood.
“It’s time. Harlow’s battle against Ivan.”
I grabbed Kade’s hoodie from the bed and slipped into it. Leiah and I left the quarters. Anyone who was headed to the quarters turned back.
“What are the rules?” I asked.
“No one interferes no matter what. The winning Alpha takes power from the loser. Any death is a power kill. Meaning Harlow is going into this battle with a lot of power.”
The school assembled in their ranks and uniforms. Though, Leiah dragged me to a corner of Alphas. Gareth, Tristan and others. Even in a crowd of people, I knew Kade was across the circle standing with Holden and other betas. Our eyes met. I wished our link worked so I knew what he was thinking. Even from so far away I offered him a smile. He smiled back. I held my hand over my heart and thought, ‘Be
safe.”

“We’ve got the best seat in the house,” Gareth said, his eyes sparkling.
“You really think Harlow’s going to lose?” I asked.
“She has to. Trust me, little omega it’s better if she loses here.” Gareth’s jaw clenched. He wanted revenge for the death of his mate.
A female combat instructor carried a flame to a dormant post. She hovered the flame over the post and ignited an even bigger flame. Other teachers went around lighting posts until a ring of burning poles formed.
Head Mistress Athena and Miller the instructor who made Alex attack me in my first shifter class. walked to the centre of the flaming poles. Alex wasn’t with the group of high ranks either. I couldn’t find him in the crowd.
“You know the drill. Pin your opponent by the neck in wolf form or death. No exceptions, Miller said.
I swallowed. I searched for Kade again. This time he was busy talking to Holden.
“There’s the Dixon Alpha and Harlow’s parents. That must be awkward,” Leiah said.
“Do they step down if Ivan loses?” I asked.
“They have to after a year unless something happens to Harlow,” Gareth responded.
I jumped as the crowd erupted into cheers. Ivan and Harlow walked out with their betas behind them. Her dangerous white hair whipped the air like a knife slicing an opponent. Ivan and Harlow met face to face and their betas backed up and folded their arms behind their backs.
I glanced at Leiah. She swallowed the lump in her throat.
“Fight!” Miller declared.
Ivan jumped back. I sensed a cockiness in him. He ripped off his shirt while all Harlow did was scrutinize him. The crowd clapped and cheered. Ivan must have been confused by Harlow’s lack of movement. He dropped and shifted into a wolf covered from head to toe in black fur.
“What the hell?” Gareth murmured.
He charged and the audience gasped. Harlow turned out of the way in the last second. For a second I thought she would use an illegal blow but that would be instant disqualification. Ivan turned around and charged again. They danced to the same tune for a while until Ivan–visibly tired.
Harlow shifted into a white wolf. Ivan’s parents jumped out of their seats.
The white wolf struck the black one’s face, drawing blood. She locked her jaw around his neck. Leiah screamed. The black wolf cried out. My heart slammed forward. Harlow bit down hard until Ivan dropped to the grass.
“Please let him go,” Leiah pleaded.
Harlow growled at everyone with the neck of her prey in her locked jaw. She won this one and she
