Chapter 683
Hera stared at Stephen. “I had the deleted recording restored.”
Stephen’s heart skipped a beat, but he tried to maintain a cheerful appearance and probed, “Really? That’s great! Have you told Rhett about this?”
“Not yet. I intended to tell him, but I felt there was a mole during the last case with Madison,” Hera said.
Stephen’s heart raced, and he clenched his hand under the table. Did she know something? He narrowed his eyes at Hera. If Hera knew something, he didn’t know what he might do to protect himself.
However, Hera’s downcast eyes and helpless demeanor didn’t suggest she knew anything. Stephen’s wariness eased.
He probed, “You mean…”
“I suspect Nate…” Hera looked up at him.
Thanks to Bernard’s jealousy, she had learned to lie through her teeth.
Stephen was relieved she suspected Nathan. “What makes you say that?”
“During the investigation of Madison’s case, I felt like someone was always hindering me from behind the scenes.
But Nate’s the only one I shared the clues with. So, aside from the culprit, he’s the most suspicious.”
Hera continued, “I told Nate that Aurora had informed me who the culprit was. Not long after, Aurora was drugged. So, I think Nate’s the mole.”
Stephen had heard some gossip about Aurora’s incident. Seeing Hera pinning the blame on Nathan, he found the situation amusing. Hera had overestimated herself.
“Based on what you said, Nate does seem suspicious.” He frowned and pondered. “Also, I know his father has a good relationship with Linda.”
Hera couldn’t help but sneer to herself upon seeing Stephen shift the blame to Nathan. When she and Nathan had speculated about the mole, Nathan was reluctant to believe Stephen would do such a thing. Nathan regarded Stephen highly, yet Stephen could push him under the bus just like that.
“Yes, his family is influential and connected to the Killian family. Bernard is not well-regarded in the family and can’t compete with them. I’m at a dead end and can only turn to you.” Hera fed into his lies.
This flattered Stephen, making him feel superior to Bernard.
He probed, “What do you plan to do? Did you bring the memory card? Can I listen to the recording?”
“I brought it.” Hera immediately took the memory card from her bag and handed it to him. “The recording contains the conversation with the mastermind and their hired hand. I want to bring Madison to justice. What do you think?”
Seeing Hera so readily hand over the evidence, a cunning glint flashed in Stephen’s gaze. He sneered at her. The reputed miracle doctor and famous hacker, Raven, wasn’t as smart as he thought.
“There won’t be a problem as long as we have the evidence! Don’t worry, I’ll help you,” he promised.
Just then, the waiter came in with the food. Stephen took the opportunity to pocket the memory card and assured her, “I don’t have the equipment with me now, so I’ll take the memory card home to listen to it. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to catch the culprit.”
Hera pretended to be delighted. “Okay. Thank you, Stephen.”
Seeing her not putting any guard up, Stephen couldn’t help but smile. “You’re welcome. Let’s eat. You must be hungry. Go back and rest after dinner, and leave the rest to me. I’ll listen to the recording and come up with a plan. I’ll inform you before we act.”
Seeing he had taken the bait, Hera smiled. “Okay.”
After dinner, they parted ways at the entrance, both with their agendas.
As soon as Stephen got into his car and saw Hera leave through the rearview mirror, he immediately called Linda.
