Chapter 676
Bernard’s voice was hoarse and filled with agony, making Hera’s heart waver.
She inhaled deeply and told herself not to be fooled by him again. If she continued her investigation, Bernard would try to stop her. This made him her enemy.
“We’re all grown-ups. Can’t you be more mature? A person can live even if they’re all alone,” Hera stated coldly.
Bernard opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out. He knew he had hurt Hera really bad this time. Gaining her trust and forgiveness wouldn’t be as easy as before.
Even so, he didn’t want to be separated from her.
Eventually, he muttered, “You promised me that you wouldn’t mention anything about breaking up-
“And you promised me you wouldn’t lie to me!” Hera spat.
“But without you, my life is meaningless!” Bernard croaked.
Unfortunately for him, Hera was no longer at the door. She had gone back to her room, leaving him standing in the study alone.
The voices in his mind started quarreling again.
“Stop her! Hide her! That way, she won’t leave you again! Hurry up and hide her in a secluded place! That way, she won’t leave you because of anyone anymore!”
“No, don’t do that! You’ll hurt her by doing that!” the voice of reason objected to the idea.
“Lock her up! Then, she’ll belong to you and you only! She’ll listen to you!”
“No, you can’t do that!”
The fierce disagreement between the voices made Bernard’s head hurt even more. He clasped his hands on both sides of his head as he growled in agony, but the pain didn’t subside. Then, he started throwing his fist on the ground as if he could clear his head by doing so.
Back in her room, Hera busied herself packing her things. It was impossible to ask Bernard to leave the house, so she’d be the one to leave instead.
Besides, staying here would only remind her of him. And whenever she was reminded of him, she’d remember how much of a fool she was for trusting him.
Suddenly, she heard some noise coming from the study. There was no telling what Bernard was up to in the study that made Tiramisu scamper out into the corridor and into her room.
Staring down at Tiramisu, which curled up beside her feet, Hera said, “Don’t be scared. I’ll take you with me.”
She patted Tiramisu’s head and comforted it for a while before heading to the study to have a look.
There were plenty of important documents in the study, ones that she needed, so she had to take them away before Bernard destroyed them.
After punching the ground several times in the study, the searing pain that spread from Bernard’s fist managed to keep him clear-headed a little.
When he heard footsteps at the door, he was worried that Hera would see how irascible he was, so he grabbed some books from the shelves and scattered them on the floor to cover up the bloodstains.
After that, he grabbed the perfume bottle on the desk and threw it on the ground to cover up the scent of blood. When Hera arrived at the door, her eyes immediately fell on the smashed bottle of her favorite perfume on the ground. The room was filled with the thick, overwhelming scent of the perfume.
Still, her sensitive sense of smell helped her catch a hint of blood in the air.
A frown crept onto her face, and she demanded, “What in the world are you doing?”
Bernard, leaning against a shelf, pressed his bloody fist against his back to hide it from her sight. He said, “I don’t want to leave you.”
Hera didn’t feel like staying there much longer. She quickly grabbed her laptop and some important documents before returning to her room to pack her things.
When she was done, she messaged Samantha and left her room. Turning around, she almost bumped into Bernard. His eyes were bloodshot, and in his eyes were a complicated mix of emotions. He kept his hands behind his back, which seemed rather odd to her. His sudden appearance gave her quite a shock.
She furrowed her brows as she eyed his hands, which he was conspicuously trying to hide. For all she knew, he could be hiding a weapon.
“What are you trying to do?” she hissed.
Bernard simply stared at her, his eyes flickering with various emotions. He grabbed his left wrist with his right hand, and his grip tightened as he looked at her.
He clutched his left wrist so tightly that his fingers started to spasm, and the veins on his right hand started bulging.
He tried hard to suppress the devil within him so that he wouldn’t hurt Hera, but it became more and more apparent that he was on the brink of giving in.
