Chapter 674
Bernard plucked his car keys from the ignition, grabbed the box of cake from the passenger seat beside him, and headed into the house.
Seeing Hera sitting in the study, he hollered, “Sweetie, I bought you a tiramisu cake. Come give it a taste.”
Hera didn’t respond. She simply sat in the study with an impassive expression as she caressed Tiramisu on her lap. Bernard sensed that something was off, so he placed the cake on the table and went to the study to check on her. “What’s wrong?” he asked, concerned.
Hera glanced at him coldly before looking at the computer screen again. Bernard followed her gaze and saw the code on the screen.
It was the code he had written quite some time ago.
His heart skipped a beat. The code, combined with the gloom on Hera’s face, gave him an ominous feeling.
He grabbed a chair and sat down beside her. “Sweetie, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Before he returned, Hera’s thoughts were all jumbled up. Now, she was strangely calm.
She stared at him in silence, watching him continue his act.
The coldness in her eyes came as a total shock to Bernard. He hesitated for a bit. Before this, he had never gotten the chance to tell her this, but he had to right now.
“Can you stop investigating Daphne’s death?” he finally asked.
Hera was so close to finding out the perpetrator’s identity. Why would Bernard suddenly tell her to stop looking into the case?
Swallowing the turbulent waves of emotions in her heart, Hera pretended to be calm and composed.
“Why? Why do you want me to stop?” she asked.
“Because I promised Lucius that I wouldn’t look into it anymore. I also promised him that I wouldn’t let investigate it either. I’m indebted to him, and that’s the only thing he asked of me. I can’t refuse.”

Bernard added, “I’m sorry. I should’ve told you about this sooner.”
But if he had stopped Hera from investigating in the beginning, he wouldn’t have had the chance to be with her. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t let her continue her investigation for personal reasons at first, but after seeing how much she was going through just to find out who the perpetrator was, he couldn’t bear to stop her.
Hera stared at him unblinkingly. The two of them had been so close to each other this morning, but now, she felt as if he was a stranger.
Now, she had no idea if Bernard was telling the truth or if he was simply putting on an act. How could she forget that he was so good of an actor or that he could fall out with someone in the blink of an eye?
“Did you go and see him?” Hera asked, her tone cool. It was like the calm before the storm.
Bernard gave it some thought before replying, “I did. It was ten years ago, I think.”
Ten years ago!
Hera started looking into the matter ever since she returned last year. Why was he telling her this now?
“You purposely erased the recording in the memory card, didn’t you?” she seethed. “You even had Felix erase my memory!”
The words that came out of her mouth sounded like a warning to herself, reminding her of how foolish she was back then.
She had been fooled twice in the hands of the same person, yet she still trusted him and believed in him. She was fooled by his sweet words all the time.
Hera felt like asking if he felt a sense of joy and satisfaction whenever she failed to find out the perpetrator’s identity despite her numerous attempts to uncover the truth.
A mix of emotions flitted across Bernard’s eyes. In the end, Felix chose to tell Hera about it! “Sweetie, let me explain,” said Bernard. “I didn’t delete the recording on purpose. Back then, I accepted a commission to erase a person’s voice from the recording. I didn’t know that it was Linda who posted the commission. I only found out about it later.
“But it was too late. I created the repair software to fix my mistake. I was hoping that when you found out about the truth, you’d at least know that I had repented.”
His last sentence made Hera feel as if he was trying to talk her into trusting him again. Wasn’t it because of the software that they got back together?
Back then, she had thought that he was trying to help her to investigate the matter. But now, it occurred to her that the clues he had marked down for her in the office were to remind him of how much progress she had made so that he could stop her from continuing her investigation.
Bernard continued explaining, “The memory I asked Felix to alter isn’t a good one. I’m scared that you’ll leave me if you remember”
“Bernard!” Hera roared. “I’m human. I’m not your private property! You can’t decide for me!”
He knew just how important that memory was to her!
