Yvette was too concerned about Zachary’s life to recall what she had said.
Her grip on Xavier’s hand was tight as she pleaded, “If you save Zac and make sure that he’s alright, I won’t ask for a divorce anymore. I’ll stay—” Tears streamed down her face, mixing with her blood as they dripped on the back of his hand.
Xavier reached out to wipe her tears. He only realized something was amiss when something sticky coated his fingers. “What happened to your face?” Only then he realized that Yvette reeked of blood.
She said, “They told me that they would let Zac go if I disfigured my face, but—”
Xavier’s chest tightened. Although he couldn’t see, he could feel the sticky warmth of blood on his hand.
He shouted, “Go get the doctor now, Mark!”
A medical team had joined them when they had arrived. They were ready to handle any emergencies that might arise.
Only then Mark snapped out of his reverie and replied, “Got it!”
“I’m fine. I don’t need the doctor-” Yvette declined.
“Listen to me. I promise to make sure Zac is unharmed.” She calmed down slightly after hearing Xavier’s promise, yet she refused to leave.
Xavier immediately got the doctor to check on her.
The doctor was surprised when he saw the injury on Yvette’s face. He wondered what had caused such a deep wound. He then disinfected her wound.
The helicopter finally flew directly over Zachary. To avoid injuring him with the rotor blades, they could only lower a ladder and send someone down to rescue him. Tristan watched with bated breath. He was also worried about Yvette at the same time.
When Zachary saw that someone had come to rescue him, he calmly reached his hand out to the person.
Someone was live streaming online. There were many who were equally nervous. They were all astonished by his calm demeanor.
Someone commented, “That child is amazing! I would’ve gotten weak on the knees if it was me.”
Another cheered, “Oh my god, they finally got him!”
Everyone was relieved when the rescue team got a hold of Zachary. Zoey was the only exception.
She was stomping angrily in front of the screen. “What is Derek doing? Why didn’t he pick up my call? Why did he let that child go?”
Gemma also saw what happened. “That’s enough, Zoey. You’ve already gotten your revenge now. Yvette will surely lie low from now onward.” Derek’s call came through at that moment. “I’m sorry, boss. I couldn’t do it to such a young child.”
Before Gemma could even answer, Zoey erupted in anger and started yelling at him. “My mom didn’t take you in just for you to make your own decisions, Derek! I’ll have yo@fired if this happens again!”
“Zoey!” Gemma warned, getting upset. Derek had risked his life along her side for years. He wasn’t someone Zoey could just order around.
Zoey stopped talking when she saw that Gemma had gotten mad.
Gemma said, “You did nothing wrong, Derek. Go get some rest now.”
Derek replied, “Alright.”
After Gemma ended the call, she told Zoey, “Derek is not a subordinate. You can’t disrespect him again.”
Gemma was reluctant to criticize
Zoey too harshly. She then reminded the latter to stay humble. Zoey perfunctorily agreed, but of course, only on the surface.
Once Zachary had been rescued off Tirion Bridge, he immediately threw himself into Yvette’s arms. “Mom!”
Archibald had also rushed over. He
finally relaxed in the car when he saw that Zachary was safe. “How I wish for that child to be my grandson.”
After that, he asked his subordinate, “Have you found out who was behind it?”
His subordinate shook his head and said, “Not yet. I suspect the people who kidnapped him must have significant backing.”
Archibald replied, “Of course. Anyone who dares to mess with someone the Lanes and the Shaws cares about is really playing with fire!”
