Zoey stood up as well, wanting to follow them. However, Jeremiah stopped her. “Zoey, wait for me here.”
He sounded gentle, and she couldn’t say no in front of Shannon. However, she still felt upset. After all, she was about to get engaged to him. So, he should be accompanying her back to the room first. After Jeremiah left the house, she clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palm.
It was dark outside, and it was also snowing heavily.
Yvette thought Jeremiah would only accompany them to the gates, so she didn’t decline his offer.
She walked forward while tugging on Xavier’s clothes. However, her vision slowly became blurrier, and she couldn’t see the path clearly anymore.
She pinched her own hand to keep herself awake.
Xavier knew Jeremiah was following behind them, so he grabbed Yvette’s hand with his warm one.
Yvette immediately sobered up. Just as she was about to pull her hand back, Xavier tightened his grip.
Then, he said to Jeremiah, “You can leave us here. Instead of wasting your efforts on us, you should just do your best to manage the business.”
Jeremiah stopped in his tracks and immediately understood what Xavier was implying. The latter knew that he’d drugged them.
It finally made sense to him why Xavier wasn’t feeling anything at all. Unwilling to admit defeat, Jeremiah said mockingly, “That’s where you’re wrong, Xav. I’m just focusing on something that should’ve belonged to me in the first place. What’s wrong with that?”
It felt tense between the two men. Since Yvette wasn’t feeling like herself, she didn’t realize what was going on.
She was so tired that she kept nodding off. When she couldn’t keep herself awake anymore, she leaned against Xavier.
Xavier didn’t mind it at all and carried her in his arms right away. As she leaned on his chest, she fell asleep. She felt like her body was burning in her dreams, and it felt truly uncomfortable.
When Jeremiah noticed that Yvette had fallen asleep, he stopped beating around the bush with Xavier. “It’s time for you to return what doesn’t belong to you, Xav. She never even loved you in the first place.”
When Xavier heard that, he couldn’t
help chuckling. “So what if she
doesn’t love me? I’m her legally wedded husband. You should just blame yourself for impersonating me back then.”
Before he left, he warned Jeremiah. “Stop using dirty tricks in the future. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
Jeremiah watched as Xavier left
with Yvette in his arms. The gentle look in his eyes vanished. When he was about to head back, he saw Zoey standing behind him.
His gaze changed instantly. “Have you been standing there the whole time, Zoey?”
She thought he was being weird and said, “No, I just got here. What’s wrong?”
He stopped asking about it and said coldly, “Nothing. Let me take you back.”
Suddenly, she approached him and hugged him. “We’re getting engaged soon, Jerry. Let me sleep with you tonight.”
However, he gently removed her hand from himself. “Zoey, I want to save it for our wedding night.”
Zoey hadn’t expected there to still be such a conservative man in the world. Her hands fell stiffly by her sides, but she felt happy inside. “Sure.”
…
Meanwhile, Yvette felt extremely hot. She’d always been afraid of the cold the most, so she didn’t understand what was wrong with her that night.
“It’s hot,” she mumbled as she gripped Xavier’s shirt tightly.
At that moment, Xavier had already gotten into the car with her, and they were heading to a hospital. He purposely teased her, asking, “Did you catch a cold?”
He reached out to feel her forehead, which felt warm. Then, he moved his slender hand to her cheeks, and it felt especially hot.
Yvette shook her head and pressed her face against his hand. She only felt a little better that way. “I don’t know. Let’s get back quickly. I’m tired.”
“Sure.” Xavier sounded a little hoarse.
Since she was pregnant, she
shouldn’t have been drinking in the
first place, and on top of that,
Jeremiah had spiked her drink with
something. Xavier blamed himself for forgetting to stop her from drinking.
