Chapter 6 Reluctance To Engage
Recognition dawned on Vera’s face. Her complexion shifted from red to pale, her eyes radiating a potent hostility. Yet, she dared not provoke me.

Seated beside my mother. I grumbled, “I didn’t want to attend today. Henry insisted I accompany him. It’s dreadfully dull.”
“My dear, this is a significant event. It’s not about whether it’s dull or not. My mother gently chided, her tone filled with affection.
I stole a glance at Vera and continued my conversation as if nothing had transpired. “It’s tedious. By the way, Mom, I’ve asked Lewis to hire some housekeepers from a domestic service company. I’ve decided to put on some weight. Henry thinks I’m too thin and need to eat and sleep more
Vera bit her plump lips, seemingly in distress.
We should have hired them ages ago. Your place is so spacious. How can you manage it alone?”
I wanted to experience a life of just the two of us. Now, I’ve had my fill.” I said cryptically. After all, Vera was merely a fleeting presence in Henry’s life, insignificant, unlike Violet. I didn’t need to consider he
Suddenly. Vera stood up and left.
Chloe followed closely behind, likely embarrassed.
When the reception ended, I decided not to return with Henry. Instead, I wanted to spend a few days at my parents‘ house.
“Well, I’ll leave first. Henry didn’t care where I was, as long as I didn’t cause him any embarrassment.
My father was engrossed in a lively conversation with his friends, oblivious to the reception’s end. My mother handed me the car keys and asked me to wait for her in the parking lot while she found a way to curtail my father’s chatter.
I took the keys and headed to the underground parking lot. As I was about to get into my father’s car, I spotted Henry and Vera in a heated argument.
Vera clung to Henry’s clothes, her face a picture of grievance. “You treat me so well. Don’t you have any sincerity? I don’t believe it!”
“Believe it or not, it’s your choice. Just don’t bother me anymore.” Henry forcefully shook off Vera’s hand.
That’s Henry for you. Once he’s had his fill of fun, he discards people without a second thought.
Did Vera genuinely believe she was his true love just because of a house?
Henry caught sight of me from the corner of his eye. His impatient and disgusted gaze landed on me, as if I were the woman pestering him at that moment
I quickly got into the car and locked the door. If it weren’t for waiting for my parents, I would have

Seeing me maintain my distance, Henry seemed to lose his cool. He marched towards my father’s car and knocked on the window. I could see his lips move. “Come out!”
1 frowned, shook my head, and mouthed “No.”
My phone rang. It was Henry, “Ramona Xander, come out!”
“I don’t want to get involved in your affairs with her.” replied, meeting Henry’s furious gaze through the car window.
I had a plan. If I couldn’t get a divorce before Henry and Violet met, then I would endure for a while longer, endure until he initiates the divorce, and then immediately agree. That way, I could still get a portion of the Patterson Corporation’s shares. I wouldn’t lose out.
In his previous life, Henry didn’t ask for a divorce from me until after a year of relentlessly pursuing Violet. At the same time, he confronted his family.
I refused and fought with him for nearly a year, only to fail.
After being reborn, I constantly thought about revenge. It was a futile obsession. The previous life felt more like a dream, while this life was reality before the tragedy happened. I didn’t intend to become a lunar
in reality just because of a nightmare.
“Come out!” Henry was furious. I guess he never saw he refuse him.
Vera, with tear stains on her face, walked over and clung onto Henry’s clothes, refusing to let go.
She was a minor celebrity after all. Why was she so desperate in front of Henry? I felt like I saw another version of myself and had no right to mock others.
Henry shot me a fierce glare, then grabbed Vera’s hand and led her to his car. As I watched him drive away in a cloud of dust, I breathed a sigh of relief.
I was nearly asleep when my parents finally returned to the car.
“Why do you talk so much? Mona is already tired of waiting!” My mother scolded my father.
“Oh, it’s about the project in the south. We need to get it approved, so we have to discuss it thoroughly.” My father replied while fastening his seatbelt
I sat in the back seat, feeling drowsy all over.
In the past, I dreamed about chasing Henry. Now, I dream about the previous life, as if the heavens were afraid 1 would forget the tragedy 1 experienced. They often reminded me through dreams,
“Mom, I want to eat sticky rice chicken. My mother saw me sitting in the back and joined me in the back seat. I quickly held her hand and leaned against her.
That’s my mother’s touch, comforting and warm.

overnight, filled with sorrow and desolation.
“It’s so late, and I’m still going to make sticky rice chicken for you?” My mother patted my hand with annoyance. “What happened today? Did you fight with Henry? It’s been ten days or half a month since you came home.”
“Well, my
mind was clouded by love!” I said cheerfully. “From now on, I want to be a caring daughter.”
My one–sided love for Henry was known to many around me, so when my mom heard those two sentences, she was quite surprised. My dad almost turned the steering wheel in the wrong direction.
My dad asked, “Don’t you like Henry anymore?”
I do like him, but it doesn’t stop me from letting go.
In the end, I couldn’t hold onto this man. He didn’t belong to me; he belonged to Violet, that youthful and beautiful girl.
“Dad, we’ve been married for five years. Isn’t it normal for couples to have ups and downs? Honestly, I feel like I should do something else instead of being consumed by him.” I answered quickly.
That makes sense. Look at that boy Henry, always surrounded by scandals. I’ve been fed up with him for a long time!” My dad suddenly gained confidence and expressed obvious dissatisfaction when talking about Henry.
Previously, my dad refrained from saying anything about Henry because he saw how infatuated I was with him. He was afraid I wouldn’t like it if he did.
I agreed. “Exactly, he’s a scumbag!”
I started the topic, and my dad and mom criticized Henry one after another. That’s when I realized how much anger they suppressed for me.
It was heartbreaking, and I felt guilty. I couldn’t lift my head.
When we got home, it was late at night. I took a shower and headed to bed. I don’t know how long I slept, but my mom knocked on my door. I asked in a daze, “What’s up, Mom?”
“Since you wanted to eat sticky rice chicken, I made some for you. Get up and have some before you sleep. My mom said to me.
I instantly woke up, sat on the bed, and stared blankly for a few seconds. Then, I felt warmth in my eyes as tears welled up.
After being reborn, I hadn’t cried yet, not even when I dreamt of the painful scenes from my previous life. It was only discomforting. I had long been numb to pain and couldn’t bear it anymore.
But my mother made the sticky rice chicken I wanted in the middle of the night, and I couldn’t help
but cry.
