KAEL.

“He couldn’t walk, so I carried him out. When I was about to go back, I couldn’t anymore. The fire had already consumed the whole cabin.” I continued speaking. “They said a candle caused it, and she might not have sensed the fire until it was too late. It was almost winter, so all the windows were closed. She was trapped in her room.”

“I’m sorry…”

“They found my mother in the ensuite bathroom. It was probably the only place she was able to escape to. She was naked. She shifted into her wolf but probably couldn’t get out.” My voice broke.

Adessa took my hand and cupped it with both her hands, squeezing it gently.

“For many years, I struggled to accept the reality that I could have saved her, but I was not able to do so. While Rasmus spent many years trying to save me from everything, proving that he was worth costing my mother’s life.”

Silence befell us before I decided to say more. “I don’t know what I felt when I found him with Desiree, but it must have been painful, not only because Desiree was my fiancee but because it was Rasmus. But after I spoke with him, I wanted to believe he would not do it on purpose. So, even if I was still confused about what happened between them, I knew he and Aunt Aria were the only people I could rely on. Because they promised on my mom’s grave that they would look after me. They would never fail her.”

Adessa removed her seatbelt and slid an arm around my back before hugging me with both arms, resting her head on my side. “Your mom, she must be a wonderful woman.”

“She was. It was the reason I couldn’t bear to give her ring to anyone. Not to Miranda or any female that would try to take her place in our home. It was the only thing left of her in the room where they found her body. It was on the sink counter. She took it off before she shifted.”

“And I almost lost it.”

I wrapped an arm around her. I held her head and then planted a kiss on her forehead. “I want to believe it was Mom’s way of leading you to Corrine, so you had a place to stay and money to use while I was still lost.”

She nodded her head. “Thank you, Mom.” She mumbled, and it made me smile.

“You would have loved her.”

“I’m sure I would.”

“She looked like Aunt Aria.”

“Aunt Aria loves you so much, Kael. She talks so highly of you as if you were her son.”

Those words made me smile broadly. “She helped shape me and gave me my confidence back after Mom was gone. She made sure Rasmus and I would have each other’s back all the time.” “And Rasmus delivers.”

“I think so.” I chuckled, and then I realized we were approaching the area where I would pick up the car. “We’re here.”

I entered the parking lot, scanning the area, before I spotted the car Rasmus described. “Can you drive this car to the space I will vacate with the other car?”

“Hmmm, I think so,” she replied, but I sensed her nervousness.

“Is that a yes or no?”

“I’m not good with parking, Kael,” she confessed. “But I can do it.”

I stopped the car and left the engine on before getting out. I didn’t say anything and helped her out of her seat. She was about to take the driver’s seat when I tugged her and guided her to the new car. “I thought I’d park the car,” she said as I opened the door and ushered her into the passenger seat.

“I changed my mind.”

“I can drive. I drove Alpha Draco’s car for many hours.”

I rested my elbow on the car’s roof before leaning closer to her. “Tell me, my beautiful wife, did you crash the car somewhere because I was sure I saw some dent at the rear.”

Her mouth opened before she squinted her eyes, but I saw a playful smile crawl on her lips. “It was dark when I backed the car to park, so I hit something.”

“I see.” I pressed a kiss on her forehead because she looked too fucking adorable. “Tell me, how many of our cars did you crash while we were married?”

“Did Landon tell you?” Her eyes rounded as if she couldn’t believe the betrayal.

My laughter echoed on the closed walls of the parking area as I shook my head. “I was only guessing. So, you did…”

“Just two.”

“Did I get upset?”

“Worried. You scold Landon for letting me drive.”

“I’m surprised he could still walk.”

“Oh, you would never hurt him, or I have no one to drive me around.”

“Right. So now, stay back and just watch me drive all these cars. I need you alive and breathing.”

She giggled, and her eyes twinkled

that I could not stop myself from reaching her face, cupping her chin before pulling her closer to me and

laughter subsided, and in a

a split

second, she was already kissing me

back.

I was the one who pulled away. “We need to get out of here before they catch us.”

Her cheeks reddened, but she nodded her head, motioning with her to shoo me away. “Go, go, before we get hot and heavy and get disturbed again.”

I wanted to say something more, but it might just backfire. Having a hard-on while walking was not ideal, so I shut my mouth and gave her a salute before closing the car door and walking to the other side to take the driver’s seat.

We didn’t talk more as I navigated

the car out of the parking slot and

replaced it with the other car. I grabbed our little belongings, and after making sure Adessa still had the pouch with her cards, I locked the other car and began driving away.

“Kael.” She broke the silence between us after a while.

“Hmmm…”

“I asked Alpha Rasmus to find us a wedding ring. So while we travel, people will leave us alone and not try to hit on you.”

“On you, you mean,” I said, my brows raising.

“Well, to both of us,” she giggled. “If that’s okay with you.”

“Did he get us rings?”

“He said he was not sure he could get one, but there are rings in this pouch. In the same sizes as I told him.”

“Then it’s ours. Give me your ring.”

She handed me the small one before I laid my hand in front of her with my fingers spread out. “Do the honor, wife.”

taking my hand. “I take you, Alpha Kael Daeyra, as my husband,” she began as she slipped the ring on my finger…to have and to hold from this day forward.” She then smiled and tapped my hand twice before

letting it go.

I flipped my hand over, and she placed her hand over mine. I turned the car on autopilot before taking her hand in front of me. “I take you, Luna Adessa Quejeros, for better or worse, for richer, for poorer…” I paused as I slipped her ring. “…in sickness and in health.” She continued, and I felt every word of that.

I opened my mouth to the next part, which was love and to cherish, but she beat me into it.

“…to honor and to cherish,”

Yeah, maybe it was too early to tell her I might be falling in love with her already.

“…to honor and to cherish,” I repeated. “…till death do us part.”

“…till death do us part.” Her voice broke, and I knew she was struggling not to cry.

Her arms wrapped around my neck as she slammed her body against mine, and my arms wrapped around her, hugging her tightly as she sobbed softly in my hold.

This was supposed to be a light moment, us joking about the rings, but like me, Adessa was also affected. I wanted to believe we felt the same way about our marriage-we could still make it work.

But it was all up to me now to get her out of this mess alive.
