Chapter 615 I Do Not Want Her To Be Sad
A flicker of pain flashed across Lysander’s forehead.

It was precisely because she understood so well that she wavered over time. She wanted to grasp the last fleeting hope like an ordinary person who hadn’t studied medicine.
Josiah didn’t utter another word. He just quietly stayed by her side.
At times like these, no one but herself could pull her out of her emotional turmoil.
The serene ambiance in the room was only broken when Josiah received a phone call. He glanced at the caller ID and answered the call in front of Lysander. “Mr. Maverick.”
Lysander quickly looked over.

Josiah was holding his phone with a serious expression. After a brief moment, he said, “All right, please wait a moment. I’ll be right there.”
Judging from Josiah’s defensive attitude, it could not have been Howard.
Lysander became anxious first. “What does my father want with you?”
“I’m not sure either.” Josiah shook his head, his voice gentle and soothing. “He doesn’t know that I’m with you right now. He says he wants to talk privately with me. Don’t worry, if anything comes up, I’ll definitely let you know.”
Recalling the secret that Maverick had painstakingly concealed, Lysander didn’t have the heart to expose it. She halted in her tracks and said, “All right.”
Josiah swiftly walked out, but he gently closed the door behind her as if he didn’t want to make even the slightest sound.
He headed straight for the staircase at the end of the corridor. On the most secluded part of the first floor, he found Maverick.
Maverick was sitting on the lowest step, surrounded by the choking smell of smoke. The ground was littered with cigarette butts.
-It seemed like he had done quite a bit of mental preparation before calling Josiah.
Josiah deliberately made a bit of noise with his footsteps as he approached him, then casually sat down beside him on the step. “Mr. Maverick, I know I shouldn’t be the one to say this as I’m the junior here, but you’re smoking way too much. It’s not good for your health,” Josiah advised politely at the thought of Maverick’s lung cancer diagnosis.
Maverick extinguished the freshly lit cigarette in his hand and tossed the cigarette butt into the trash bin before returning to his seat. He then said, “For me, it doesn’t matter anymore.”
He sound incredibly weathered.
Josiah’s heart immediately sank because he suspected that Maverick had actually noticed long ago that he and Lysander had discovered his illness.

reluctance to cause worry for each other.
Josiah did not respond. He silently waited for Maverick to speak first.

Compared to their last encounter, Maverick had aged significantly. He let out a long sigh before explaining the reason he had called Josiah over.
“I noticed it this morning. You might be a person of profound thoughts and are inscrutable to others, but when it comes to matters related to Lysa, you are very sincere. You must have realized that my health hast been jeopardized, haven’t you? It has been quite an effort to hide this from my family.”
Maverick never thought there would come a day when he would admit to Josiah the things he had kept hidden even from his wife and daughter. After saying those words, he couldn’t help but let out a self- deprecating laugh.
Looking at Maverick’s state. Josiah also felt a wave of discomfort in his heart. He nodded, acknowledging Maverick’s assumption.
Maverick nodded knowingly, then asked, “Does Lysa know about it already?”
Ever since Lysander and Josiah divorced, this was the first time Maverick had a calm and composed conversation with Josiah. One had no choice but to let go when he was on death’s door.
“Lysander was just a bit concerned about why your attitude toward me changed so suddenly, but she’s still unaware of your illness.”
After a moment of hesitation, Josiah decided it would be better to keep things under wraps for now.
Maverick let out a sigh of relief and said, “It’s good that she doesn’t know. Please, don’t ever tell her about my condition. If you find her worrying about me again, or wanting to go to the hospital to inquire about my condition, find a way to stop her. Consider it as a favor I’m asking of you.”
Josiah replied somberly, “All right, rest assured.”
The lingering scent of smoke in the stairwell didn’t dissipate. The environment only worsened their already gloomy moods. Yet, neither thought about moving elsewhere to talk.
Especially Maverick, who no longer had the time or energy to protect his family with the aggressive and irritable temperament he once had. Simply sitting here and smoking for a while caused his chest to ache intermittently.
Josiah, deeply concerned, said to Maverick, “There’s a doctor over here, Mr. Maverick, let me take you there…”
He was midway through his sentence when Maverick cut him off, saying, “No need, I know my own body. quite well. If anything is truly amisk, all previous attempts to cover it up would have been in vain.”
Josiah respected his decision. “Okay.”
Seeing his positive attitude, Maverick paused for a moment before he began to eloquently discuss the matter that had been weighing heavily on his mind.
“Lysa has always been smart since she was a child, but isn’t there a saying that when one is too smart, they will get themselves hurt? That’s pretty much her, kind and sensitive. If she is wronged outside, she would only keep it to herself. No matter how you ask her, she will never tell.”

As he spoke, his eyes involuntarily reddened. He shakily raised his hand to wipe his face, barely keeping his emotions in check. Then, he continued. “I won’t be able to hold on much longer. If I were to leave one day, leaving Lysa with Laura and Mich. I really can’t help but worry.”
Josiah sternly said, “Mr. Maverick, please refrain from saying negative things right now. I’m already reaching out to overseas specialists and will be able to arrange a consultation for you soon. Try not to be so pessimistic, your attitude plays a significant role in dealing with this illness. For the sake of Mdm. Laura and your daughters, Lysander and Michelle, you need to take good care of yourself.”
Maverick chuckled and remarked. “You’re quite the talker. I never noticed that about you before.”
Josiah laughed dryly. “Actually, I’m quite selfish. Lysander holds you in high regard. I don’t want her to be upset.”
Maverick took a deep breath and tapped his finger on Josiah’s shoulder. “Remember, these are your words. Don’t ever forget.”
“Okay.
Maverick took a whiff of his cigarette and exhaled, forming a cloud of white smoke.
“Laura is a good wife and a good mother. Despite her age, she remained as innocent and kind as before, which led to her being deceived frequently over the years. Mich, on the other hand, was quite the troublemaker who gave people headaches. Poor Lysa will have her hands full taking care of them in the future. I can’t imagine how exhausting it would be.”
Although Maverick was talking about the flaws of his wife and daughter, his words were clearly filled with happiness and reluctance to let go. His eyes were gradually turning redder, and it was evident that he was on the verge of losing control of his emotions.
As a man, despite their considerable age gap and starkly different backgrounds and personalities, Josiah was still able to understand Maverick’s feelings at that moment,
Family was their weakness.
