The Charming Ex–Wife
Chapter 542 The Deadly Duo
His words came out jumbled and incoherent, sounding utterly deranged.
Lysander remained standing, unmoved.
Zachary blew a whistle, teeming with intrigue. “Aren’t you scared?”
“What’s there to fear? It’s broad daylight with people coming and going. Surveillance cameras are everywhere. What can you possibly do?”
Zachary raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you afraid that I might have a knife and could stab you without a second thought?”
“You wouldn’t.” Lysander was certain. “Only Harry would do such a foolish thing as perish together. Not you. Even if you wanted to kill me, you’d find a way to protect yourself. Most likely, you’d find a scapegoat to take the blame while you sit back and watch from a safe distance. Is Lysanne your scapegoat?”
“Pfft!” Zachary nodded heavily. “I must admit that you do know me well. What a pity, though.”

“Why’s that?”
“It’s a pity that Josiah has the advantage of a stronger family background and a higher starting point than me. That’s all it is. A head start. If I had his family resources, I wouldn’t necessarily be any worse off. If we joined forces, we would be an unstoppable force. Is there anything in this world we couldn’t accomplish?”
As Lysander listened, the more outrageous it sounded. “Firstly, aren’t you overestimating yourself? Secondly, even if you had the family background of Josiah,
I wouldn’t be with an unscrupulous devil like you.”
“Do you really think Josiah is some kind of saint?” Zachary scoffed with a cold laugh. “He only plays the good
y in front of you, but his hands are far dirtier than mi
Lysander didn’t want to elaborate on this matter. She asked, “Tell me something. Did you have anything to do with Lysanne showing up at my sister’s ward, spouting all sorts of things?”
Zachary’s eyes widened. “Don’t pin all the blame on me. Besides, what good would it do me if you and Josiah were to sever ties? If you two were to break up, I’m afraid my situation would only get worse.”
Lysander furrowed her brows. “Was it really not you?”
“You’ve said it yourself. I’m a refined self–preservationist. I certainly don’t fancy being thrown into the ocean by Josiah to feed the sharks just yet.”
Zachary was always full of fibs, but considering his motives, he truly didn’t have a need to act in such a
manner.
Was that Lysanne’s own idea? Was she the one who, after being berated by Josiah at the entrance of the resort that day, was so indignant that she deliberately stirred up trouble? However, Josiah has no shred of pity for her now. He made his stance clear last time. If she crossed his boundaries again, could she bear the consequences? However, on second thought, one could never predict Lysanne’s actions using conventional logic. Lysander rubbed his temples, feeling the wave of nausea return once again.
At the same time, the discomfort in her stomach was churning.

“Just leave. I won’t be asking for money on your behalf. It seems you won’t be able to kill me today either, so I’m heading back.”
“Don’t rush. Let’s first take a look over there.” Zachary lifted his hand, gesturing toward a car parked across the shrubbery. Next to it, two men dressed in black seemed to have been standing there for quite some time.
Lysander couldn’t tell if those men were bodyguards.
Zachary saw her confusion, his smile turning increasingly sinister. “Do you see? Those people are all arranged by Josiah. They follow me day and night, regardless of where I go. Even hiding at my mother’s place is pointless! Life has been like living in a prison!”
Lysander sternly questioned, “If you hadn’t made the first move against Michelle, would you have ended up in this situation?”
It seemed as though Zachary was stumped by the question, but the next moment, he started to argue his point forcefully.
“You’re saying I’m wrong? How could I possibly be at fault, Lysander? It’s you who’s in the wrong. If it weren’t for you, how could I have caught Josiah’s attention? He’s now watching me around the clock, and if I dare to do anything to you or your family, he could make me vanish from this world without anyone noticing.”
Lysander rétorted, “If you’re not hurting anyone, what’s there to be afraid of?”
“I’m afraid of losing everything I have now, so Lysander, you must help me with this favor today…”
Lysander subtly began to retreat, her face betraying no hint of her movement. She persisted in challenging his skewed logic by asking, “Aren’t you afraid of death?”
“I am, but what scares me more is the thought of leading a mediocre life! I’m too exceptional to just blend into the crowd. All I need is one chance from Josiah to prove my worth. Once he sees my capabilities, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep me in Guerra Group. If he was willing to spend fifty million to recruit a showpiece, he could surely give me one hundred million, no, five hundred million, because I could bring him even greater profits!”
Zachary was increasingly unable to restrain himself, his eyes shimmering with desire.
Lysander had already picked up her phone, ready at any moment to press the emergency call button.
As expected, Zachary swiftly snatched her phone. Without any warning, he abruptly pulled her to the other side of the road. “Come over here!”
Lysander was yanked by him, causing her to stagger. Desperately, she used her other hand to grab onto the tree trunk beside her.
“Things have already progressed to this point. What on earth are you planning to do?” She protested, “I’m warning you. You’ve already paid the price for taking shortcuts. If you continue to be stubbornly blind to your mistakes, you might end up behind bars!”
Zachary had completely given up on his facade, and his once composed face then twisted beyond recognition.
“What’s the difference between my current situation and being in prison? Regardless, Josiah looks at me

like I’m an ant he could crush at any moment. Instead of waiting for him to crush me, I might as well try to fight back. As long as he funds my project, as long as I can successfully complete this project, I can prove myself! All I want is one chance, Lysander. Please help me…”
Sensing danger, Lysander decisively swung the handbag she was carrying and hurled it toward the threat.
Despite being hit repeatedly, Zachary refused to let go. His expression was wild as he said, “Josiah won’t take my calls, and I can’t get past the gates of Guerra Group. However, I have to make this project work! Lysander, are you scared? If you’re scared, shout it out. The louder you shout, the better. Let those two people over there hear you. They’ll notify Josial.”
He clung to Lysander as if she were his last strand of hope.
Lysander winced as she was tightly gripped, growling in a low voice, “I kept your secret out of respect for Mdm. Camila before. If your mother knew sh
raised a lunatic, how could she face her close friend of
decades? Zachary, if you back off now, everything can still be fixed.”
Zachary had already been pushed to an irrational state by the current situation. “What’s happening now doesn’t matter. Once I succeed in the future, my mom will be proud of me!”
Zachary exerted a considerable amount of force, causing her breathing to become laborious, to the point where she couldn’t utter a single word.
“Cry out, Lysander! Hurry up and cry out… If you don’t, I might just strangle you,” he warned.
