The Charming Ex–Wife.
Chapter 541 Your Life Is At Stake
“It’s nothing,” Laura responded indifferently. “Don’t bring
oping anything next time. We lack nothing here”
Camila was still smiling cheerfully. “When visiting a sick person, one shouldn’t come empty–handed. This is just a small token of our affection from Zachary and me.”
Lysander replied on behalf of her mother, “Mdm. Camila, Zachary, thank you.”
It seemed like Zachary had a hidden message in his words when he said, “No worries. If anything, I should be the one thanking you. After all, you’ve done me a huge favor.”
Lysander gently ushered out the duo by saying, “You must be quite busy lately. If there’s nothing pressing, you don’t need to stay here. You should get back to work.”
Zachary’s eyes narrowed coldly, and his gaze toward her was
chilling.
Camila then exchanged a few words with Laura about Michelle’s condition when she noticed the silence. She casually remarked, “Lysander, I heard from your mother that you’ve been quite busy with work lately. Is that right?”
“I am, but I still find the time to visit home,” Lysander replied politely, careful not to direct his dislike for Zachary toward Camila.
Camila hadn’t seen Lysander in a while and assumed everything was just like before. She warmly said, “You’re so young. Don’t work too hard. Zachary is the same. Lately, I don’t even know what he’s been so busy with, always working overtime into the wee hours.”
“Working hard is a commendable thing.”
Camila was quite pleased with her son’s work. She chuckled and said, “Yes, it seems he’s started a new project. If all goes well, he’ll soon have a business of his own.”
Both Maverick and Laura listened in silence, neither of them continuing the flattery.
Michelle did manage to steal an extra glance at Zachary, but before she could get a clear look, Lysander, who had stood up to draw the curtains, obstructed her view. She gently warned Michelle, “It’s cold outside. Don’t let the wind chill you.”
“Thank you, Lysander,” Michelle said, instinctively tightening her coat around herself.
Zachary’s teeth were nearly grinding together, unable to devise a plan against Lysander’s guardedness. All he could do was say, “Mom, you’re jumping the gun here. I want to make something of myself, but it all depends on whether things go smoothly.”
His words carried a hidden message, intended specifically for Lysander to hear.
Camila was initially bewildered when she heard those words. After a moment, she responded, “We older folks can’t really understand you young people’s matters. Don’t just sit here brooding. Why don’t you take Lysander out for a stroll? You can chat in a different setting. Mrs. Thorne and I can have our own conversation, too.”
In a place hidden from the others, Zachary shot a resentful glance at Lysander. “Sure. Lysander, shall we step outside to talk?”

He stood up, but no sooner had he approached Lysander than she subtly sidestepped him. However, there was something about Michelle that Lysander needed to question him about.
Hence, she was the first to walk toward the door. “I also happen to have something to say to you.”
Camila hastily hinted at him, urging, “You’re both good kids. Don’t let work create a rift between you. You should spend more time together. Even if you can’t become a couple, you can still remain good friends.”
When Maverick saw that Zachary was really about to leave, he stepped forward to stop him. “Lysa, it’s cold outside. Whatever you two need to discuss, do it inside.”
Zachary reluctantly put on a facade. “Mr. Thorne, Lysander and I just want to catch up on old times. Besides, this is a hospital filled with Lysander’s former colleagues. Are you still worried that I’ll mistreat her?”
Maverick’s temper almost flared up. “You-”
“Dad, it’s all right,” Lysander quickly interjected, finding an excuse to interrupt. “It’s almost noon now. The wind has died down. It’s not that cold anymore.”
Upon hearing these words, Maverick replied with a sense of relief and concern, “Please, don’t wander off too far. Stick to the crowded areas.”
“Don’t worry,” Lysander reassured.
Upon seeing the situation, Camila couldn’t help but tease Laura, “Oh, your husband is something. Your daughter is already so grown up. What’s there to worry about? If this continues in the future…”
The words that followed were left lingering in the ward, accompanying the sound of Zachary closing the door behind him.
Once they were alone, Lysander and Zachary could no longer maintain their outward composure, their expressions turning cold in an instant.
As noon approached, the small garden was nearly deserted, with only a few security guards pacing back and forth in the distance.
Lysander lowered her voice and asked, “What about Michelle’s car accident? What can you tell me?”
Zachary chuckled. “Didn’t Josiah tell you?”
“Tell me what?”
“Pfft! Mr. Guerra is always the romantic. He didn’t want to worry you, so he didn’t tell you a thing.”
Lysander said coldly, “Did you come all the way to the hospital just to talk in riddles to me? If you have nothing to say, then it’s better if you leave. I won’t see you out.”
With that, Lysander was about to turn around and head back to the ward.
Behind her, Zachary wore a gloomy expression as he said, “I need you to go to Josiah again and have him finance my project.”
“Just go directly to him for business matters!”

“But if you were to speak up, this matter would surely be easily resolved, right? He’s still quite attentive to y resolved, right? He’s still quite attentive to you, isn’t he?”
With a laugh, Lysander said, “You’re dreaming.”
Zachary’s laughter held a hint of menace. “Tsk… The last time I called you, he was the one who picked up. It was so late. What could you two possibly be doing together?”
Lysander chuckled sarcastically. “Josiah is no fool. Did you really think he’d give me whatever I asked for?”
With a cold chuckle, Zachary made it clear that he was unconvinced. “You should give it a try.”
Lysander didn’t bother explaining. She simply said, “I’ve done what I had to do under your threats in the past. Based on Mdm. Camila’s words, you’ve also been quite busy recently. Since you’ve gotten what you wanted, you should stop pushing your luck. If you continue to be insatiably greedy, what I’ll ask from Josiah won’t be money anymore.”
“What’s that, then?”
“Your life.”
“Ha!” Zachary burst into laughter. “Isn’t that why he’s so fond of you? You really do understand him. How did you know that what he desires is also my
life?”
“Why don’t you just keep your head down and behave properly? You’ve seen what Josiah is like when he’s enraged. For Mdm. Camila’s sake, you should really look out for yourself.”
“I can’t bring myself to accept it, though, knowing that my abilities are no less than anyone else’s. I’m merely deprived of an opportunity, just one step away from success. Only one step!”
“All right, then. You can only have one. Choose between your career and your life.”
Pierced right where it hurt, Zachary was so infuriated that his hands, hanging by his sides, started to tremble uncontrollably.
After Lysander finished speaking, she turned to go back to the ward. He then immediately blocked her path and declared angrily, “You’re not going anywhere!”
The landscape tree on one side, along with the lush shrubbery, conveniently obscured the view from elsewhere.
Lysander cautiously asked, “What do you want to do?”
Zachary’s eyes blazed with an unwilling rage, his fierce expression revealing his frustration.
“What do I want to do? Josiah wants to kill me, huh? Even if I were to die, I’d make sure his precious person dies with me…”
