The Charming Ex–Wife
Chapter 486 You Seem Quite Disappointed In Men
As soon as the words fell, a sharp gaze swept over from the rearview mirror.
The car that had been driving smoothly came to a sudden halt. Both Lysander and Tiffany, unprepared for the abrupt stop, lurched forward, taken aback by the surprise.
Lysander, in particular, was just raising her hand and almost got flung from the back seat to the front.
Tiffany’s face was as pale as a sheet. She barely managed to steady herself by holding onto the back of the chair in front of her. She sat down, still in shock and unable to utter a single word.
Josiah clenched his hands on the steering wheel, nearly deforming the leather cover in his grip. His complexion was so dark that it looked terrifying. His voice was even gloomier as he apologized, “Sorry, a stray dog just ran past.”
The car had already passed the most congested section of the road, currently cruising along a one–way street with a speed limit.
Lysander glanced around the tree–lined path on both sides of the road, then said thoughtfully, “I didn’t expect you to be so compassionate.”

Tiffany followed suit and peered out the car window. Of course, she didn’t even catch a glimpse of a stray dog. However, she had complete trust in Josiah and didn’t overthink it. Believing him wholeheartedly, she said, “Lysander, Jose might come across as aloof, but he’s actually very kind.”
Lysander’s eyelid twitched, resisting the urge to retort. Instead, she subtly suggested, “Sometimes, it’s not just about what a person says, but also what they do.”
Tiffany dutifully took note, then asked, “Lysander, is this wisdom gleaned from your own experiences in love?”
Lysander snorted coldly. “It’s an insight I’ve gained from marriage.”
Tiffany asked innocently, “Is it because of your ex–husband?”
“Sort of.”
While they were talking, Josiah started the car, remaining silent as he continued to drive toward the hotel. The aura he exuded was startlingly tense.
Tiffany was engrossed in conversation with Lysander, oblivious to his peculiar behavior. With a look of admiration, she said, “Lysander, I’ve heard that the quickest way to get over a past relationship is to start a new one. If your ex–husband hurt you, you might consider accepting a new boyfriend. That j
time seemed quite nice to you.”
”
Lysander said, “Those are two separate matters.”
Josiah’s expression reflected in the rear–view mirror grew increasingly unpleasant.

Lost in her own thoughts, Tiffany lamented, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all the stories in the world ended with like a fairytale–where the prince and princess would live happily ever after? If those who loved each other could marry and have children in the end, how beautiful that would be.”

married, and those who are married might not necessarily be in love.”
At first, Lysander’s words seemed like a tongue twister to Tiffany, but she still understood. “Lysander,
you and your ex–husband together because of love?”
weren’t
Lysander responded succinctly, “We met no a blind date.”
Tiffany was filled with confusion, “If you can marry someone you met through a blind date, surely feelings must have developed later on, right?”
At that moment, the silence within the car was eerily unsettling.
Clearly, Tiffany wasn’t the only one awaiting her answer.
After a moment of hesitation, Lysander carefully stated, “When people spend time together, they inevitably develop feelings for each other. However, these feelings are not the same as romantic love.”
“I’m having trouble understanding. If there were feelings between you two, why did you break up?” “Marriage, you see, doesn’t always benefit from complete clarity. Sometimes, a bit of confusion and going with the flow is better for its longevity. But ultimately, it’s about your choice. Would you rather choose a painful separation while fully aware, or would you rather blind yourself and play the fool, all for the sake of what appears to be everlasting to the outside world?”
“But without love, how can it last forever?”
The term ‘love‘ was indeed too profound.
Lysander was exhausted, yet at that moment, she completely lost the desire to rest. There was a fleeting realization in her eyes. “Love doesn’t have a physical form and is extremely elusive. You never know when it will come, or when it will suddenly disappear. I can’t stand a life where my emotions rely on someone else’s conscience. In the end, taking care of myself is the most practical thing to do.”
Josiah spoke leisurely, his tone devoid of any discernible emotion. “Ms. Thorne, you seem rather disappointed in men.”
Lysander said, “I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed. After all, disappointment implies there was hope to begin with. I’d rather say I’ve learned a valuable lesson from this mistake.”
Josiah remained silent.
As he passed by a convenience store, Josiah pulled over and parked his car.
“I’m going to buy a pack of cigarettes.”
When he returned, he already carried the scent of smoke on him.
Throughout the journey, he never again lifted his gaze to the rearview mirror, and he was unwilling to utter a single word more than necessary.
The car quickly came to a halt/in front of the hotel.
Josiah said, “You guys go back and rest first. I’ll go to the front desk and get another room.”
Tiffany asked. “Is there a vacant room in the hotel andy?”

Josiah didn’t utter a word; he simply walked toward the front desk.
Lysander and Tiffany entered the elevator together. Her room was on the ninth floor, while Tiffany’s on the tenth. She bid Tiffany farewell before exiting the elevator first.

Due to the hectic day, she was overwhelmed with sleepiness as soon as she lay down on the bed. It was as if an unknown power was drawing her onto the mattress.
She decided to sleep first, planning to take a bath when she woke up in the morning.
For reasons unknown, that alternating sensation of cold and heat returned once again.
It seemed even more intense than the day before.
At first, she thought the window had been left ajar, and she got up intending to check it. But the moment she stood up, she was overwhelmed by a wave of dizziness, so intense that she couldn’t stay on her feet.
The sound of the door being unlocked echoed from outside.
Josiah pushed the door open and walked in.
Lysander furrowed her brows. “Didn’t you get another room? Why are you here?”
The faint scent of smoke still clung to Josiah’s body.
Even then, the predominant aura was one of piercing cold.
She was familiar with this scent. After finishing his cigarette, he would stand in the chilly wind for a while, waiting for the smell of smoke to dissipate before reentering the house.
It was exactly like the moment when Lysanne first appeared.
However, she couldn’t think about anything else at the moment. She simply turned back to her bed and wrapped herself tightly with the blanket.
“Are you cold?”
Josiah glanced at the air conditioner’s display panel, which indicated that the room temperature was twenty–six degrees Celsius.
Moreover, Lysander was still covered with a thick quilt, her entire body curled up underneath it.
At this point, even a fool would realize something was amiss. Josiah walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. With a concerned voice, he asked, “What’s wrong?”
He reached out, touching her forehead. The skin beneath his fingertips was unusually hot, suggesting that she was having a fever.
Lysander was suffering from a splitting headache, feeling dizzy and disoriented. When she sensed someone pushing her, her first Instinct was to push back, But she was so exhausted she could barely keep her eyes open. With a hoarse voice, she grumbled, “Leave me alone.”
Josiah was leaning too close, prompting her to push him away gently. “You were fine during the day, how come you suddenly have a fever now?”

Lysander’s mind was buzzing. Forced to sit upright, she was seeing double in her vision.
It seemed as though, for some strange reason, the world was spinning.
Josiah, in a firm gesture, once again seized Lysander’s hand, his demeanor turning stern. “What have you been up to since you returned?”
Lysander struggled briefly, but she couldn’t pull her hand away. Reluctantly, she lifted her face. The previously radiant glow of her complexion was now replaced by an abnormal red hue.
Josiah met her gaze, noticing the layer of mistiness in her eyes.
With a resolute tone, Josiah declared, “Come with me.”
Lysander didn’t have the strength to break free from his hold. She leaned on the coffee table with her free hand and demanded. “Where are you taking me?”
Josiah suspected she hadn’t fully awakened yet and reiterated in a cold voice, “To the hospital”
