Chapter 6
When Mateo died, Alyssa wasn’t there. She even skipped his memorial for Megan’s birthday party. What really got to her was when Hailey went ahead and apologized to Sean and Megan on her behalf, then sent a video to Mateo’s closest friends- the men who had always treated her like family. In that video, she came off as some ungrateful, heartless daughter, while Hailey looked like a saint, soaking up all their sympathy and praise for her “deep affection.”
When things went south, those friends, who should have been there for her, turned their backs and gave all their love and care to Hailey instead.
This time, though, Alyssa was determined to change her fate. She decided to visit Mateo’s grave–not just to shift people’s opinions of her or maybe win back their support, but because of the deep pain and guilt gnawing at her. She needed to talk to her dad, to spill everything and find some peace for her troubled heart.
So when Megan came at her with her demands, Alyssa didn’t even flinch. “If you want something, do it your damn self,” she snapped.
Megan’s face went pale; she was clearly thrown off, especially since she was in the middle of a video call with her friends. This blunt refusal was like a slap in the face. “What did you just say?” she stammered, anger and disbelief dripping from her
voice.
“Are you fucking deaf?” Alyssa shot back, her gaze cold as ice. “I said, if you want something, do it yourself.”
Megan was shaking with fury, barely holding it together. “My brother told you to do it… she muttered through gritted teeth.
Before she could get another word out, Alyssa had slammed the door in her face.
Megan kicked the door, her anger boiling over. “Alyssa, you think just because my brother and mom aren’t here, you can treat me like shit? I’m calling Sean right now, and we’ll see how he deals with you.”
Trying to keep her pride intact in front of her friends, Megan continued, Tm gonna call my brother. She thinks she can mess with me just because my brother and mom are away. I’ll make sure he puts her in her fucking place.”
A chorus of voices buzzed through the phone as the girls all spoke over each other, eager to give Megan advice.
“Megan, you’ve got to tell Sean what’s going on, one insisted. “Alyssa treats you like crap when he’s not around. If you don’t call her out now, she’ll keep pulling this shit.”
“Yeah, Megan, make her apologize–like really fucking apologize on her knees or something. Make sure she learns her lesson this time, another chimed in.
“God, I’d kill to see Alyssa groveling in front of Sean,” a third girl snorted. “My dad used to tell me to learn from her, always going on about how she’s so capable and whatever. Megan, you have to get a video of this and send it to me. I want to show my dad what a pathetic joke she looks like now.”
Megan’s lips curled into a smug smile. “Okay, I’ll hang up now and call my brother. It’s my birthday today, so he’ll definitely come back. Once he’s here, I’ll video call you guys again so you can see her beg for forgiveness.”
Hearing the chatter from outside, Alyssa just rolled her eyes with a cold smirk, not interested in dealing with them. She headed straight to the bathroom to take a shower.
After her shower, the chose a simple yet elegant black dress that owed beautifully around her, highlighting her grace. When she stepped out of her room, her eyes locked with Sean’s. He was wearing a tailored dark red plaid suit paired with a blue tie that sharply contrasted with his outfit. The awkwardness of his youth had vanished, replaced by the calm confidence of a man who knew exactly what he was worth
