Chapter 68
Adeline West
Sebastian’s face was unreadable as he stood there, staring at me, at Killian, at the mess of truths that had just been thrown into the open. His jaw clenched, his eyes burning with shock and betrayal. I opened my mouth to explain, to say anything that would make this better, but the words felt stuck, tangled in my throat.
“Sebastian,” I pleaded, taking a step toward him, “please, just let me explain.”
His eyes flicked to mine–cold, distant. “Explain?” he snapped, voice low but full of anger. “What’s there to explain, Adeline? You’re his mate and his wife? And never told me?”

I shook my head, my heart pounding, desperate to make him understand. “It’s not what you think! He rejected me—years
ago.
It’s over between us. I didn’t-”

“Save it,” Sebastian cut me off, his voice shaking with barely controlled fury. “I trusted you, Adeline. You told me there was nothing between you and him. Now I find out you are married to him?”
“No, Sebastian, it’s complicated,” I tried, reaching for him, but he pulled back, his eyes flashing with hurt.
“Complicated? Complicated?” He laughed bitterly, running a hand through his hair. “No. What’s complicated is how I was fool enough to believe you were honest with me.”
He turned to leave, shaking his head as if he couldn’t stand to look at me anymore. Panic seized my chest. “Wait! Don’t away like this. Please, let me explain everything!”
But Sebastian didn’t stop. He stormed out, the front door slamming behind him with a force that shook the walls. My heart clenched painfully, and I wanted to run after him, to explain everything–to tell him that Killian meant nothing to me
anymore.
I turned slowly, my breath catching in my throat as our eyes mer. He was still standing there, anger radiating off him like heat, his jaw clenched so tightly I thought it might break. His eyes were dark, filled with something raw, something that made heart ache even more.

Killian’s eyes narrowed, his chest rising and falling heavily. “I could ask you the same thing, Adeline,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. “Why the fuck are you letting him touch you? Letting him kiss you like he owns you?”
I felt the anger surge, hot and fierce. “He’s my fiance, Killian. I’m not your mate anymore, remember? You rejected me. You divorced me.”
“So, that’s it then? You are going to continue the little affair words were laced with venom.

“Belong to you?” 1 cut him off, my voice incredulous. “I don’t belong to anyone. You threw me away, Killian! You rejected and banished me like I was worthless, and now you want to claim me again? After five years? What is wrong with you?!”

Killian’s face twisted with fury, and before I could react, he grabbed my arm, pulling me close until I could feel his breath on my face. His grip was firm, possessive, and I hated the way my heart raced at his touch. I hated that, even now, his presence still affected me.
“You were eager for it, weren’t you?” Killian’s voice was low and dangerous. “Eager for the kind of love I didn’t give you? For a man to fill the space I left? So eager to forget the way your body reacted to my touch that night and you started to have an affair with Sebastian behind my back.”
I stared at him in disbelief, my chest heaving with rage and pain. Affair with Sebastian behind his back? And what night is he talking about? What the hell is he talking about?
His grip on me tightened. “And now? Now you’re pretending to love him?” His words were cold, cruel. “You’re fooling yourself, Adeline. You don’t love Sebastian. You’re just desperate for someone–anyone–to love you.”
That was it. His words hit me like a slap, the insult digging deep into wounds I thought I had buried. My vision blurred with tears, and before I could stop myself, I swung my hand, slapping him hard across the face.
The sound echoed in the room, and for a moment, there was nothing but silence between us. Killian’s head snapped to the side, his jaw tight, his eyes blazing with fury.
My hand stung from the impact, but I didn’t care. I didn’t regret it.
“I never had an affair with Sebastian.” I spat, my voice shaking with emotion. “But now, I will marry him, and you… Yo a mistake, Killian. Our marriage was a mistake, and the Moon Goddess made the biggest mistake of all by choosing you as my mate.”
The words left my lips before I could stop them, but I meant every single one of them.

Killian’s eyes darkened, his face hardening like stone. For a moment, he didn’t say anything–just stood there, staring at me! his chest rising and falling with deep, controlled breaths. And then, without a word, he turned on his heel and walked away.
I stood there, frozen, watching as he disappeared through the door, his heavy footsteps echoing in the hallway until the sound of the door slamming shut filled the house.
I was left standing in the empty silence, my heart hammering in my chest, my breath coming in ragged, uneven bursts. The moment he left, the floodgates opened. Tears streamed down my face, unstoppable, uncontrollable. My legs gave out beneath me, and I collapsed onto the floor, burying my face in my hands.
I couldn’t stop crying. I cried for the hurt, for the years of pain, for the betrayal I had never fully recovered from. I cried for Sebastian, for the mess that had exploded between us, and for the love I thought I had finally found, now shattered into pieces.
But most of all, I cried for myself—for the girl I had been when I married Killian, full of hope and dreams, and for the woman I had become, haunted by the past that wouldn’t let me go.
No matter how much I tried to move forward, Killian was always there, pulling me back into the darkness. And now, it felt like I would never be free of him.
