Chapter 122
KAIDEN STIRLING
“You’re supposed to be taking care of the children. That requires keeping your eyes on them,” Lyra said, and for the first time in the ten minutes since Freda and the human male left in his car, my eyes left the spot where the car had been parked. I looked at her and let out a sigh.
I was living a life of torture. I was feeling and dealing with so much torture that it seemed to be a part of my everyday life, Another thing that would add greatly to it was dealing with her attitude right now. I just could not do it.
“Look Lyra, I don’t want any trouble,” I sighed and looked away from her. She chuckled and plopped herself into the space beside me. “I haven’t even done anything. You’re calling me trouble?” She said in a tone that was meant to sound like she was offended. The only thing I could hear was amusement. “Yeah well… I don’t want to argue. I just want to have a nice day with my kids,” I said in response.
Was that too ***n much to ask for?
First, the human male showed up and ruined my mood. I was convinced that Freda had invited him just to spite me, but she had looked panicked when she saw him. And she said she hadn’t invited him. I didn’t know what to believe.
She didn’t assuage my doubt when she walked away with him, spoke to him like he was the world to her, and then left with him

right after looking at him.
J**st… I was losing my d**n mind.
The can in my hand crumbled in my grip, and the soda in it fizzed out onto the grass. The metal from the can cut into my hand and I heard Lyra gasp beside me. “Woah, woah, are you okay?” She asked, her voice filled with panic.
I turned to glare at her and she backed away, raising her hands. I could see the submission in her eyes and I knew it was my wolf that was showing.
I looked away from her and then looked down at my hands. “G**n it,” I hissed through gritted teeth. I dropped the crumbled can a watched as the soda and blood poured down from my hand. Harper was coming towards us.
“Come on, let’s get that cleaned up so that the kids won’t get freaked out,” she said, grabbing my arm and pulling me up. I let her. “We’ll be right back. Stay here,” Lyra said to Harper and I smiled at her before I turned around and followed Lyra into the school building.
We headed straight for the bathroom and we were surrounded with silence as we walked down the hallway. She pushed the door open and when we walked in, she shut the door. I stood still, staring into space and saying nothing. She stared at me for a moment before taking my hand and leading me to the sink. She turned on the faucet and stuck my hand under it.
I sucked in air through my teeth because it stung. But d**n, I’d be lying if I said it was anything compared to the sheer agony in my chest.
“What’s going on with you?” She asked, breaking the silence.

“Why are you helping me?” I asked in return. She chuckled. “You can’t answer a question with a question,” she said in a teasing manner. “I’m the Alpha; I’ll do whatever the f**k I want,” I cut back, and she blinked, stunned by my attitude. “Sorry,” she said with a light scoff.
I took a deep breath and watched her as she tied her handkerchief around the width of my hand to stop the bleeding before my healing would completely close the wound. After she tied it she washed her hands and wiped them down on her jeans before looking at me.
“I’m sorry,” I said, looking at her face. She looked surprised. T hated that. I was not a jerk, not really. Why the hell was she so surprised that I was apologizing?
“I’m sorry I scared you back there… And I’ve been a **k,” I said and she chuckled. “That you have,” she said, and then, after a moment’s hesitation, she shook her head and looked at me. “It’s okay. I’ve been a bit hard to you too,” she smiled at me and I did not have the strength to return it.
I was drained. Completely drained from the torture of living around my mate but not living with her, from the torture of guilt at the thing I had done to her. I had taken everything from her. Her life, her happiness, her sister… Even her family. They were not the cheerful family I knew. Not anymore. Not after she left.
“F**k,” I sighed and she looked at me.
“What are you thinking?” She asked in a quiet voice.
