Chapter 74
Lenore’s phone vibrated with a private number as she hit the first floor. She ducked into the restroom, plugged in her earbuds, and answered in a voice that was indistinguishable. “What’s the scoop?”
On the line, a gruff male voice, laced with malice, spoke up. “Boss, about the cargo we snatched for the Mueller family from Thaloria, it slipped into Orinadia via the dark web!”
Hearing Orinadia mentioned again, Lenore figured the shipment had to be lethal. With the virus chaos there far from resolved, and now weapons in the mix, it looked like someone was gunning for anarchy.
A cold glint sparked in Lenore’s eyes, and a wicked grin spread across her face. “Swipe it back.” She had a talent for this sort of backstabbing.
With his mask off, Silas stood at the building’s entrance, his features striking, one hand casually in his pocket. He exuded an aura of nobility and untouchability.
He was on a call, his voice as frosty as ever. “Intercept it again.”
Chuck rolled up in his car, pulling up to the curb.
Silas ended his call and shrugged off his trench coat. He was about to slide into the car when he caught a dark figure in his peripheral vision through the revolving glass door of the building. His eyes narrowed, and he paused.
Lenore emerged, meeting Silas’s piercing gaze. Her attention flicked to Silas’s right hand, where his ring sat perfectly in place, and his scent of sandalwood was faint but pleasant.
After a moment of silence, Lenore broke the silence with a mischievous smile on her lips. “You’re the elusive fifth director of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce?”
Now it made sense why the mysterious fifth director had vouched for her, standing on her side. It turned out that Silas had deliberately removed his ring.
Silas rubbed his nose, a low chuckle rumbling out, loaded with implication. “So you are the mysterious heir to the Heartland Chamber of Commerce fortune?”
Lenore’s tongue pressed against the roof of her mouth. “Mr. Faulkner, you really know how to fly under the radar.”
No wonder Jason was worried. If they were to fight, it would be more than just a building that could come crashing down.
Lenore thought, ‘Silas, the big shot in Denisville, the feared ruler of Thaloria, serving as a director in a tiny local chamber of commerce? It looks like he has more free time than he knows what to do with!
Silas raised an eyebrow. “Right back at you.” Her idea of founding a chamber of commerce at just seven was beyond his imagination. It seemed the string of zeros on the test papers, including the records of being expelled from school, were all fake.
A breeze blew in. Lenore’s skin was pale, devoid of any color. Her shirt and blazer didn’t look very thick. A chill surrounded her.
Silas shook out the trench coat in his hand and skillfully draped it over her, his voice deep and magnetic. “Where do you live? I’ll drive you home.”
Lenore glanced at him. She didn’t protest, and she rattled off an address. Then they climbed into the car together.
Chuck, behind the wheel, was puzzled. ‘How is Mr. Faulkner with Ms. Smedley? No, wait, what is Ms. Smedley doing in Senanville? And they both just came out of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce building together?‘ he wondered.
Chuck’s beady eyes were full of big questions. But nobody was around to give him any answers.
Once they were in the car, Lenore settled into a cozy spot and fired up her game. Wayne was online and ready. He invited her to join his team, and the moment she did, he piped up, “Lenore, lead us to victory in this game!”
Sent back to Denisville by Silas and under Pedro’s watch, he was cut off from his usual crew and found himself bored stiff, killing time with video games all day. He was the classic type who sucked at games but loved playing them.
They went through three rounds of the game on the ride. Lenore didn’t have her headphones on, and in every match, she could hear Wayne’s desperate cries for help.
When the car pulled up outside the mansion, Lenore spoke into the mic, her voice lazy and languid. “I’m home. I’ll join you next time.”
“Next time might never come, Wayne complained. “That heartless Silas sent me back to Denisville, and now he’s shipping me off to Mantriland.

Chapter 74
You probably won’t see me online for the next half a month…” His voice wasn’t exactly quiet.
‘Daring to curse at Mr. Faulkner? I didn’t expect Mr. Garcia to have such guts behind his back, Chuck thought, his mouth twitching, nearly losing grip on the steering wheel.
Lenore glanced at Silas and casually asked Wayne, “Aren’t you afraid Silas will hear you cursing at him like that?”
Wayne scoffed. “He’s off in Senanville now, and you’re not going to tattle on me, so he won’t hear a thing.”
Silas’s gaze noticeably darkened.
Lenore held her phone up to him, a mischievous and cool smile playing on her lips.
