Chapter 71
The fourth director, Brody Boucher, a thin man in his thirties with an upright appearance, held a tenth of the board’s shares. Amidst the indignation of the other three, he remained silent.
Lenore responded to a few important messages before putting away her phone, looking up, and lifting a finger to adjust her hat brim, her bright eyes filled with mischief.
She said, “Do you think I’m unworthy of being the heir, or is it because I’m a woman?”
Her voice stayed the same, a clear and bright feminine sound. Her tone was pretty neutral, but the moment she spoke, Jason’s brow twitched. It was a telltale sign that Lenore was getting ticked off.
“He…”
“Judging by the sound of her voice, she’s just a young chick, right?”
“Mr. Jason Chapin, this is the Heartland Chamber of Commerce’s executive conference room. Even if you look down on us, you don’t have to bring a young girl to humiliate us, do you?”
“What does a woman know about business?”
Jason wanted to put in a few words on their behalf, to ask for her forgiveness, but he was cut off before he could even start.
Taking turns, William, Ben, and Daniel were dripping with sarcasm and ridicule. It was like Lenore sitting in that spot was a slap in their faces. They were full of snide remarks and harsh words.
Brody frowned. “Even if you think Mr. Jason Chapin is wrong about this, you shouldn’t attack without even understanding, should you?” He had always been on Jason’s side.
William snorted coldly, “The Heartland Chamber of Commerce doesn’t belong to one person. When it comes to choosing a chairman, even if we’re not qualified to serve, we have the right to vote.”
Ben nodded in agreement. “If it were Mr. Joseph Chapin, I’d be fine with it, but this random girl from who knows where? No way I’m on board!”
“A woman as the chairman of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce? We’d be the laughingstock,” Daniel said with a sneer. Their comments were getting more and more biting.
Jason’s gaze darkened. “I haven’t stepped down yet.” Although he could step down at any time as long as Lenore was willing to take the position, he was afraid Lenore might not want it.
Daniel sneered. “She’s already sitting in the chairman’s seat; what difference does your stepping down make? And even ten or twenty years from now, it won’t change the fact that she’s a woman.”
They had long been dissatisfied with Jason as the chairman. But the Heartland Chamber of Commerce was created by Jason ten years ago.
Although he had taken on a few directors and established a board in the early years, the lifeblood of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce was still in Jason’s hands.
As for this heir, Jason had mentioned it a few years ago, but only verbally, and no one had seen the heir.
And Jason was in his forties and in his prime. They didn’t think he would give up such a thriving business empire to find an heir. They had never taken it seriously.
But now, the heir had actually appeared, sitting in the main seat of the conference room, and it was a woman. They couldn’t accept it, demeaning and disdaining her with every word.
Lenore leaned lazily against the back of her chair with her arms crossed, her voice light as she said, “So, you’re against me just because I’m a.
woman?”
“And if we are?” Ben snorted.
Ms. Smedley is clearly angry, and these directors are cluelessly signing their own death warrants, Joseph thought, rubbing his nose and feeling that the board members of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce were about to be reshuffled.
Jason let out a cold laugh and stepped forward. “What if I told you that the heir you’re cursing at, this young lady, is the true founder of the Heartland Chamber of Commerce?”
