Chapter 65
Lenore spoke with confidence that seemed to come naturally to her.
Silas was reminded of the night she first climbed into his car, demonstrating an uncanny understanding of the car’s AI system.
Not everyone who tinkered with cars had such a deep knowledge of AI systems. She’d known which company was behind it without even a second glance.
With his deep–set eyes, Silas hid his doubts and curiosity, asking gently, “Let’s go for a bite?”
Lenore hummed in agreement, her focus still on her phone. A message from Senanville popped up. [The fifth director will be joining this year’s Chamber of Commerce meeting.]
The Heartland Chamber of Commerce had five directors on the board, aside from the chairman.
The most enigmatic was the fifth director, who had joined five years ago, holding a quarter of the chamber’s shares and wielding significant influence.
He had only attended the first meeting with a mask, and then he vanished. All decisions since then had been made by his subordinates. No one but the chamber’s chairman knew his name or what he looked like.
With no major events at the Heartland Chamber of Commerce this year, Lenore wondered about his sudden interest in the meeting. She tapped her leg lightly with a cold glint in her eyes, and she texted back. [I’ll be in Senanville the day after tomorrow.]
Half an hour later, at Culinary Ascent, Chuck stepped out to take a call. When he returned, his face was a mask of seriousness. He glanced at Lenore and then said with a hint of hesitation, “Mr. Faulkner…”
Watching Bonnie put deboned fish into Lenore’s bowl, Silas lowered his gaze and said in a deep voice, “Go ahead.” His message was clear. There was no need to keep Lenore in the dark.
Chuck paused before blurting out, “Word from Thaloria. The goods we took from the Mueller family were snatched back!”
With her head bent over her plate as she picked at her fish, Lenore paused for a moment.
Silas’s eyes turned fierce, the air around him chilling. His voice was as cold as ice as he asked, “What happened?”
The temperature in the private room seemed to drop, and Chuck shivered, quickly explaining, “The Mueller family hired Stormwings Operatives Team Three; Xtreme personally disrupted all of Thaloria’s key domains…”
Wayne’s charming eyes sharpened, and his brow furrowed. “Any idea what the Mueller family paid?”
Chuck shook his head. The goods had been intercepted, and there would be no loss if they were taken back. But it was the first time something swallowed by Thaloria had been snatched back.
A shadow crossed Silas’s eyes. Wayne suddenly laughed, not hiding anything from Lenore and Bonnie, relishing the drama.
“You offered Xtreme over 100 million to go after Sonic, and they turned you down, only to take the Mueller family’s job and mess with you in Thaloria. Does Xtreme have a problem with you or something?” Wayne asked.
Silas’s eyes narrowed. “Maybe it’s about the goods.”
The value of those goods was more than the marked 1.3 billion. Stormwings Operatives Team Three had never failed. For the Mueller family to get Xtreme on board, they must have paid a hefty price. Things were getting interesting.
Silas’s lips curled into a cold smile as he ordered Chuck, “Find out how much Xtreme would charge to go after Sonic and raise our offer to 1.6 billion.
Chuck thought to himself that Silas had been fixated on this for nearly four years, and he still hadn’t let it drop.
Wayne couldn’t decide if Silas was just throwing money away or not. He twitched the corners of his mouth, his curiosity still piqued. “What exactly did Sonic do to you back then?” A question he’d asked many times over the years, always without an answer.
Silas glanced at him, rolled down his sleeves, and said in a cold voice, “It’s none of your concern.”
Lenore suddenly dropped her fork and stood up. “I need to use the restroom.”
In the restroom, Lenore perched on the toilet lid, deep in thought, but no memories of her past with Silas surfaced. She frowned and pushed the

thoughts aside.
She fished out her phone, plugged in her headphones, and dialed a number with a steely glint in her eyes. “Got the payment?”
“Got it!” Siren was thrilled, overseeing the inventory with the other members of the Stormwings Operatives Team Three.
She added, “Boss, you won’t believe it, but even if we can’t use this haul, selling it would keep us all off the job for four, maybe five years. It’s exhilarating!”
Lenore believed that those who rose to power in Thaloria had survived the storm of bullets.
The conversation in the private room had made it clear, inside and out, that Silas was the legendary, mysterious boss of Thaloria.
It meant that she had snatched this haul right from under Silas’s nose. The realization made her a bit excited.
