Chapter 95: Rejecting the Ungrateful Son–Time to Shine Alone
His voice dipped, cold and low.
If you listened closely, you could hear the pride he couldn’t let go of, buried in his words.
Good thing Gemma had seen through this long ago,
Even after years of marriage, Marcus still looked down on her.
In the past, it would’ve broken her. She’d question herself, doubt herself.
But
She was born to shine, a mountain standing tall.
Why waste time feeling sorry for herself? She deserved the clouds and sunrise that matched her worth.
So, she smirked, mocking him with her expression.
“Yeah, I get it.
Some people just love self–inflicted pain.”
Marcus’s calm face instantly darkened with rage.
“Gemmal
She rubbed her earlobe casually. “Sorry, this office only deals with humans. If you’ve got problems, take a left outside.”
Outside to the left was a small pet clinic.
They h
had good doctors there, though you had to book an appointment for your pets.
Marcus instinctively wanted to scold her for being unruly, for lacking the elegance of a high–society lady.
But before the words came out, he met Gemma’s teasing gaze
His chest tightened
In the past, her eyes had only ever been full of admiration for him!
Her clear, beautiful pupils reflected nothing but his shadow.
But now
The gap between then and now hit him like a sucker punch, snuffing out his anger.
“Even if we’re divorced, we still have years of history together. There’s no need to be so hostile.”
It was as if saying that could prove they had once been in love.
But he couldn’t fool his own heart.
The panic rising inside him felt like a dam bursting, drowning everything in its path.
For the first time, Marcus truly lowered himself in front of Gemma.
He’d backed down; surely Gemma would take the hint and talk things through.
But…
Gemma’s gaze grew colder, more impatient.
“You were the one who said it. Don’t cling to the past–it just puts pressure on people and makes them resist even harder.”
The second year after Mabel returned, Marcus had stopped coming home at night.
She’d confronted him in tears
“Did
you forget who stood by you during your darkest days?”
Marcus had yanked his hand away. The unintentional sneer in his eyes became her shadow for years to come.
“Gemma, I know you fixed my eyes. That’s why you never go hungry and have all the jewelry you could wand”
“But you
still aren’t satisfied. You want more.”
