Chapter 42: Gemma, Kneel and Apologize
Lindsay’s eyes went wide with shock.
“You… you know…”
C4 nodded. “You can’t hide things forever. You’ve messed up. Go to the branch office and straighten up.
Lindsay felt the heat rise in her face as her wrongdoings were exposed. She couldn’t bear to stay any longer, so she spun around and ran out.
Meanwhile…
News spread throughout the hospital that Gemma was performing surgery for Mr. Gray.
As
Lindsay rushed down the hall, she overheard people talking about the genius Dr. Kelestine.
It was then that she fully realized how far apart she and Gemma were.
She broke down, crying.
Gemma finished her rounds and began adjusting the medication for her patients.
Then, she received a call from an unfamiliar number.
“Gemma, it’s me.”
Marcus’s voice rasped through the phone.
It was hoarse, as if he’d been yelling all night.
Gemma instinctively thought about hanging up.
“Your stuff is still here–your books and your model.”
Her hand froze.
The textbooks had her notes in them. When she left in a rush, she hadn’t grabbed them.
The anatomical model she’d spent countless nights working on was too important to leave behind.
She had planned to pick it up once the cooling–off period was over and explain things to Marcus.
These items didn’t matter to him, and they weren’t worth much. She figured retrieving them would be easy. “What do you want?‘
She gripped the phone tightly, her heart racing.
“We’re married. Your things are also mine. I’ll burn my half, and it is totally fair, I think?
“Marcus Wilson!”
“You really care about these things, huh?”
“What are you trying to do?”
“If you want them, come get them. I’ll give you three days. After that, I’m getting rid of everything.”
With that, Marcus hung up, just like always.
Gemma stared at the phone, her anger almost burning a hole through it.
Marcus had given her twenty million.
Clearly, he wanted it back!
Asshole!
She regretted ever going through the trouble of helping him regain his sight.
But at least she had three days. She’d think of something-
“Gemmal”
She was lost in thought when a familiar sweet voice called out.
Chapter 42: Gemma, Kneel and Apologize
She looked toward the sound.
Noah was standing at the door, waving at her.
“Surprised?”
Gemma smiled and hurried over. “Of course, I’m surprised! What are you doing here?”
“Uncle Cassius is visiting Mr. Gray, so I came to see you. See? I’m the one who missed you the most!”
Gemma laughed, her heart warmed. She had planned to have Noah stay in her office and work on patient records, but then she remembered–Mr. Gray was her responsibility now.
Cassius was visiting Mr. Gray, and she’d be needed at the scene.
“Well, let’s go see them.” Gemma said, tapping Noah’s forehead playfully and taking his hand as they walked out.
Noah didn’t mind where they went, as long as he was with her.
However….
Gemma noticed something odd. It seemed like everyone was treating her with a lot more respect than before.
Even the doctor who had competed with her for the bonus in the hospital last year was being overly polite.
What she didn’t know was, as she passed by, people started whispering.
“Dr. Kelestine really is something else, huh?”
“Not really. A few years ago, her surgeries already had a 100% success rate.”
“Who’s that kid with her?”
“Probably Dr. Kelestine’s son. Her file says she’s married, but I’ve never seen her b husband.”
“The way they’re interacting, it’s definitely a mother–son relationship. Who said her kid was the one causing trouble in the hospital?”
“This seems like a normal mother–son dynamic. What kind of kid talks back to their mom like that?”
“Good point. I’m really impressed by Dr. Kelestine. Young, accomplished, and already has a kid.”
“Plus, no annoying husband around, they said he died. A true winner in life.”
When they reached the ICU, sure enough, Cassius was there with the hospital director.
“Hello, Director. Mr. Cassius.“
Gemma greeted them and walked over.
Before she could speak about Mr. Gray’s condition, she heard something strange–a beeping sound from the equipment. She focused, listening for a moment, then her expression changed. She immediately rushed into the room,
Before anyone could react, she yanked out Mr. Gray’s IV line.
The needle came loose, and blood began dripping onto the white sheets.
“What are you doing?”
Cedric’s eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days.
He resembled an angry lion, ready to pounce.
“If something happens to my grandfather, I won’t let you off the hook.”
Many thoughts flashed through his mind.
Mostly, he believed that Gemma was using his grandpa to pressure him into getting Marcus to apologize. Gemma didn’t have time to explain. She simply pointed at the nearby equipment.
“Look for yourself.”
Her impulsive action” had, in fact, also disconnected Mr. Gray from his monitoring equipment.
But even so, the machines were still working perfectly.

And the readings were all green.
Anyone who wasn’t familiar with the equipment would think Mr. Gray was fine and wouldn’t question whether the drugs were causing any problems.
Cedric realized he had misunderstood Gemma.
“Dr. Kelestine, I’m sorry.”
Gemma sighed in relief when she confirmed Mr. Gray wasn’t in immediate danger.
She spoke slowly.
“It’s okay. You were just worried about your family. Some things… are hard to explain”
She paused, and then continued.
“When I was overseas, I came across a vaccine. After someone gets injected, it’s like they’re marked.”
“If someone wants them dead, they can trigger a program that causes a heart attack.”
Everyone in the room shivered
How could something like this even exist?
Cedric furrowed his brow. “This sounds like some ancient curse or poison.”
“That’s one way to look at it,” Gemma replied, glancing at the equipment again.
Who would want to do this?
Was it directed at Mr. Gray? Or was it meant for her?
Cassius turned to Brooke. “Bring me my laptop.”
Just as he finished speaking, the room’s computer screen flickered, then a figure appeared–dressed in all black, with a mask covering his face.
“Heh. You guys are sharp.”
“But it’s too late. You can save him, but you can’t save everyone.”
The director’s face was cold
“What do you mean?”
Suddenly!
A loud scream echoed from outside the room.
“Doctor, the oxygen’s not working! My kid can’t breathe!”
“The incubator’s down! A lot of babies are still inside!”
“This is bad! How are we supposed to operate without power?”
The entire hospital was thrown into chaos.
“Gemma Kelestine.”
The hacker’s voice was cold and mocking. “You shouldn’t have stuck your nose into things! If you kneel and apologize now, I might consider sparing the people in this hospital.”
