Chapter 38: She Shined Brightly
Marcus returned to the hospital.
The frustration still hadn’t faded, in fact, it was getting worse.
Every time he thought about how Gemma had dismissed him, he lost his temper.
She just didn’t want to be a full–time housewife.
They could’ve talked it over.
Why push each other to the brink?
Did she really want a divorce and try to build a life on her own!
Ha…..
She was seriously our of her mind!
A small–town girl with no connections in N.L. City, no background, thinking she could make a name for herself?
She was almost thirty, and still this naive?
It pissed him off!
His fist slammed into the wall, the back of his hand already starting to bleed.
Mabel caught up to him, totally ignoring Alijah, who was still trailing behind, coughing and struggling to keep up. Alijah was young, and still recovering, his pale little face showing just how weak he was.
But i
no
one cared.
It was as if no one cared about him.
He slowed down his steps on purpose
But Mabel had already turned and rushed into the ward, not even looking back.
Inside the ward.
Mabel gasped and quickly grabbed Marcus hand.
“Max, calm down. I’m sure Gemma didn’t mean it‘
“She’s just throwing a little tantrum. She doesn’t really want to make things hard for you.”
Her words only made Gemma seem more ungrateful.
Marcus‘ anger erupted like a volcano,
“She really thinks she’s somebody!”
“Max, please don’t get so worked up. Gemma is your wife, and you can work things out slowly. The real issue now is Mr. Gray.”
Mabel had filled in for Gemma at the event today, and there were already posts online speculating about her and Marcus” relationship.
She might as well strike while the iron’s hot.
She needed Marcus to take her to meet some big players in the industry.
The more people saw her with him, the more important she would seem.
Hearing this, Marcus slowly began to calm down.
The aggression in his body started to fade.
“Max, let the nanny look after Ali. You should go see Mr. Gray.”
“Cedric is like your brother. If he needs you to step in.”
Marcus nodded. “Good thing you reminded me.”
Having Mabel by his side always made him feel at ease, his heart settling.
“Go change, and we’ll head over together.”
Mabel acted surprised. “I can go too?”
“Of course. You’re my friend, and Cedric will understand.”
Mabel lowered her head, a little bashful
But deep down, she felt disappointed.
Just friends?
Benedict was pushed into the operating room, but even though they had identified the foreign object in his artery, the surgery was still risky.
He was old, and the blood vessel was near the heart..
One wrong move, and this national treasure of a medical scientist could end up on the operating table forever.
No one dared take on that responsibility.
“Do you remember who first noticed Mr. Gray’s condition?”
“Are you suggesting that doctor should do the surgery?”
“Ridiculous. A small–time attending physician could never handle such a difficult surgery.”
“I know she can’t, that’s why I’m asking her.
“What do you mean?”
“We can’t afford the responsibility. She’s just a small attending, with no background. If anything goes wrong, she’ll be an easy scapegoat.”
The operating room fell silent.
Soon, the door opened.
Cedric had been pacing nervously, praying desperately for his grandfather, and blaming himself for not noticing these issues sooner.
Hearing the door open, he rushed forward.
“How is my grandfather?”
“Mr. Cedric, Mr. Gray’s situation is quite complicated. We’d like to meet the doctor who first diagnosed him.”
Cedric froze for a second.
“You want to see Gemma? What can she do?”
4
“Mr. Cedric, she noticed Mr. Gray’s condition just by looking at him. She has an extraordinary eye for detail. Having her in the surgery will only help.”
Cedric knew time was of the essence, so he didn’t waste a second. He quickly ordered his assistant to find her.
Just as he gave the order, Marcus walked up.
“Max, where is Gemma? We need her help now.”
Cedric’s eyes were red and swollen, almost like he was about to cry.
He had been raised by his grandfather, and the bond between them was unshakable
He would do anything to save him.
Marcus frowned.
Since they’d filed for divorce, he honestly didn’t know where Gemma was staying,
“Let’s start by looking in the surgical department.”
He patted Cedric’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of this.”
Then, he turned to Mabel.
“You stay here with Cedric and keep me updated on Mr. Gray’s condition.”
burden to him.
“I’ll go find her.”
Without another word, he turned and walked away.
Around the corner, he borrowed a phone and dialed Gemma’s number.
At that moment, Gemma was bathing Candy.
The phone had been ringing for a while, but she didn’t notice until it was nearly too late. She quickly jogged over and
answered.
“It’s me.”
Marcus‘ voice lingered in her ear again, like a ghost from the past.
Her forehead furrowed.
“I don’t want to talk to you. Just…
“It’s Mr. Gray.”
Marcus, unlike before, didn’t snap at her right away. He actually tried to be patient for once.
Hearing that, Gemma didn’t hang up.
Although Mr. Gray had been taken to the hospital, the pre–surgery checkups and expert consultations meant it wouldn’t be a quick process.
Could something have gone wrong in the meantime?
“You need to come to the hospital, Marcus commanded.
Gemma’s heart raced. She was just a small–time doctor. Even if she went, she wouldn’t be allowed in the operating room. She thought maybe Marcus was still upset about the event earlier, trying to get back at her.
“There’s no need. I’m still suspended because of the competition.”
Marcus‘ voice hardened.
“I’m giving you a chance to prove yourself and regain the hospital’s trust. Are you coming or not?”
“I think I can earn my own chances. There are plenty of experts around Mr. Gray. I don’t want to make things worse.” “Gemmal” said Marcus through his gritted teeth.
“Mr. Wilson, take care of your teeth. At your age, they’re your lifeline.”
“You’d better get over here now!”
“Well, then call the cops to arrest me.”
With that, she hung up.
Noah walked out holding Candy. “Gemma, hurry up! I can’t hold her much longer.”
Gemma rushed over to help
But just a minute later, Cedric called.
“Dr. Kelestine, please, if you come, you’ll be my hero.”
