I scooped the yogurt into my mouth. The tangy and sweet flavor filled my mouth, making me feel extra refreshed. “What should we do tomorrow if we can’t find a suitable gift?”
Colin sipped his soda and leaned against the back of the chair. He was sitting against the light. The dusk light cast an iridescent glow on him. The glare from the sun behind him made him squint when he looked at me. He had one hand above his brow. “We have to be there. And we have to bring a gift.”
“But we can’t find any suitable gifts. I don’t want to make you look bad.”
“It’s fine. It’s a gift anyway. If we can’t get her something she needs, we’ll get her something that’ll look good on her.”
Something that looked good on her? I had an idea. I’d have more creative freedom as long as it was something that complemented Jasmine.
After we had our drinks, we felt much reinvigorated. I dragged Colin with me into the supermarket and spent ten minutes picking and wrapping the gift I brought. Then, we left the supermarket and discussed what we should eat for dinner.
Colin was surprised by my sudden burst of proactivity. His starry eyes looked at me up and down as if he were verifying if I was some sort of alien.
“Why are you looking at me like this?” I put the prawn Colin had so graciously deshelled for me into my mouth, confused. “You don’t like the gift I prepared?”
Instead of filling his tummy with the delicious food before us, why was he staring at me?

“I just didn’t know my girlfriend could be this… vindicative.”
I pouted casually and stabbed at my salad. “That’s not my fault. If you feel bad for her, buy another gift, then.”
“Pfft, why would I feel bad for her?”
I rolled my eyes. After lunch, I
wanted to return to Crystal House to paint, but Colin dragged me into a boutique rubbed my sore ankle and protested, “We already bought a gift. Why are we shopping again? If you don’t want me to go to Crystal House, we can go home
Colin shrugged, pushed the door open, and led me inside. “We’re buying you some dresses.”
“I have enough dresses. No need for that.”
“It’s a birthday party. I want my girlfriend to be the spotlight there.”
Wait, was Colin bringing me to his admirer’s birthday party? That would sting.
“We don’t have to buy an expensive dress.” Deep down, I was elated. My boyfriend was bringing me along to put Jasmine in her place. How could I not be happy?

Colin replied with a smile, “I don’t know anything about luxurious things. I just think that those two dresses in the display window will look good on you.”
A salesperson was standing next to
us. She ushered us further inside once our conversation ended. “Mister, you have fine taste. The dresses in the display window are limited edition. The miss here is tall and voluptuous. She also has fair skin, so she’ll look gorgeous in them.”
