Chapter 84: Marcus: Why Can’t Anyone Else Work?
Mabel was caught completely off guard.
She was shoved to the ground, just like that.
The pain stunned her so much that she forgot to cry.
She stared at Marcus in shock.
“Marcus, that really hurt,” she said, her voice dripping with grievance.
She reached out a hand.
She was expecting him to apologize, to scoop her up.
But Marcus didn’t even glance her way.
“I’ll have the doctor take a look at you,” he said coldly before walking out the door.
The sound of the door closing wasn’t loud
But it shattered Mabel’s heart into pieces.
She picked herself up awkwardly, rubbing her sore wrist.
The softness in her eyes vanished, replaced by a bone–chilling frost.
Gemma had ruined her career.
And now she was clinging to
the she loved.
Mabel clenched her fists. She wouldn’t give up.
Gemma would pay
And Marcus? He would kneel at her feet.
Marcus flagged down the first cab he saw and slumped into the passenger seat, instructing the driver to just drive around.
Round and round they went until, somehow, they ended up in front of his and Gemma’s marital home.
The villa was empty.
Dark.
Lonely.
He didn’t even know why, but his steps wavered as he made his way to the door.
The moment he stepped inside, darkness swallowed him whole.
Everywhere.
Everywhere he looked, he saw her,
Gemma, cooking in the kitchen, her cute apron still hanging there.
Gemma, tinkering with her crafts, the cabinets still filled with impressive model ships she’d built.
Gemma, always busy, her presence woven into every tile of this house,
His legs felt like lead.
He couldn’t take another step forward.
In a daze, it felt like Gemma was standing right in front of him.
The storm inside him cleared, his heart brightening like a sunny sky after rain.
“Gemma, you’re back. Let’s forget about everything from before,” he murmured softly.
“Go make me some hangover soup
He moved into the kitchen, standing at the door.

“Why aren’t you moving? Did you forget how to make it?”
He asked her, frowning as he reached out for her.
His hand grasped at nothing
The illusion shattered.
The kitchen was empty.
Just like the hollow ache in his chest.
He clutched his heart.
The sharp pain almost unbearable, each breath tasting faintly of blood.
His body swayed
He barely managed to steady himself against the wall.
He’s really drunk
He tapped his forehead lightly and went upstairs to the bedroom
He staggered to the bed and collapsed onto it.
The mattress bounced a little.
His hand instinctively reached for the other side.
Empty.
if
Song from a dream, he sat up!
The window was open
A cold breeze seeped in, chilling him to the bone.
He yanked the blanket over his shoulders, but it didn’t help.
Still cold
Frustrated, he grabbed his phone and called Cedric
“Why won’t anyone else do?” he demanded.
Cedric, woken from sleep, paused for a long moment.
“Marcus, what are you even saying?”
Marcus flopped back onto the bed, irritated.
“Find me another woman.”
“Wait, what?” Cedric stammered.
Marcus glanced at the empty spot beside him and repeated, “In thirty minutes. Someone clean”
Resigned, Cedric reached out to his network, asking friends to call in favors. Finally, he sent someone over.
But thirty minutes later, the woman called him crying.
Marcus had tossed her out of the villa like a madman.
Cedric was so spooked he considered sending a psychiatrist instead
Thankfully, Marcus didn’t stir up more trouble that night, and Cedric finally managed to sleep.
The next morning, Marcus ordered 1000 roses and drove to the hospital.
After reflecting on last night, he knew he wanted Gemma back
Not just to clear up the online mess.
But because with her, his life had order. His home felt like home. Work felt manageable.
So…
And so, swallowing his pride once more didn’t seem so bad.
Chapter 84- Marcus Why Can’t Anyone Else Work
Gemina’s new display board had been put up, complete with a fancy border. It drew a lot of attention.
As she made her rounds, colleagues greeted her warmly.
She couldn’t help the grin on her face.
The attention felt great, like she was walking on air,
After finishing her rounds, she went to fetch water and ran into Brian.
Read Pharmaceuticals had been under fire lately, and Brian looked worn out.
“Gemma, could you do me a favor?” he asked hesitantly.
Gemma nodded immediately. She owed Brian, and this was a chance to repay him. “Anything I can do, I won’t say no.”
Brian wanted to be direct.
But he was afraid that this matter was beyond Gemma’s ability.
Brian hesitated, then gently pulled her aside to a stairwell
“Do you know how to prepare pharmaceutical compounds?”
Gemma nodded again. That was basic for someone with a pharmaceutical background.
Brian’s eyes lit up.
“What about antipyretic analgesics?” he pressed.
“Yes, I can, as long as the lab equipment and materials are reliable,” she replied.
“Though most modern ones are synthetic. Natural extracts can have added benefits, but they’re harder to produce.”
Her mentor, Emerson, had rare samples of natural remedies, but his whereabouts were currently unknown.
“Perfect, Brian said, relief washing over him.
“Read Pharmaceuticals has a batch with quality issues.
We need an expert to review them, but hiring outside could lead to leaks. Gemma, would you?
Gemma understood,
It was a tough business situation for Read.
“Of course. Let me know when you need me.”
“Soon, Brian said. “I’ll give you a heads–up.”
“No problem.”
Gemma smiled. She was genuinely willing to help and hoped Read could pull through.
After the matter was discussed, they leave together, going back to work
“I’m going to kill you!”
A man with a knite suddenly appeared, charging straight at Gemma.
“Look out!”
Brian yanked her out of harm’s way just in time, dodging the lethal blow.
Gemma’s face turned pale as she grabbed Brian, ready to run.
But the man quickly gave chase.
“Incompetent doctors! I’ll kill you all!
You’ll
pay
for
my wife’s death!”
The man screamed, his knife gleaming menacingly.
Security arrived, but the man was clearly skilled, easily overpowering them
Brian shielded Gemma, but they were losing ground fast.

“Gemma, hide!” he urged, his grip on her arm tight with urgency.
Gemma didn’t want to be a burden, so she turned and ran
But the man seemed to sense her escape and broke through the security line, lunging at her.
The knife’s tip aimed straight for her chest.
“Gemmal
Terrified, Gemma froze. Just as she thought her life was over, a flash of red blurred before her eyes. Something heavy struck
