Chapter 28: She Was Serious about the Divorce
Gemma had been so absorbed in her training that she didn’t notice the time until it was 8 PM.
“Brian, thanks for the explanation. Let me treat you to dinner.
Both of them were starving after working so hard.
Brian took off his gloves and nodded. “Sure, I’m not gonna pass up a free meal. I know a place that makes a pretty taco.”
Gemma joked, “It’s my first time treating, so I should at least get you a full–on banquet, right?”
Brian chuckled, his warm voice as soothing as a spring breeze. “Can we do installments? 1 heard a full banquet needs over 2 hours. How about one dish per day?”
Gemma put her hand on her pocket, pretending to be in pain.
“It sounds like you’re trying to bankrupt me.”
Brian suggested, “How about one dish per three days?”
“Brian, you must’ve been a businessman in your past life. You’re excellent at calculating.”
“If you’re that tight on cash, you could cook me some homemade meals to pay off the debt.”
“Alright, Ill invite you over for a homemade meal sometime.”
Gemma responded casually, not noticing the look in Brian’s eyes. It was like fireworks had gone off in them.
Across from the hospital, there were many food shops. After dinner, Brian insisted on driving her back to her rented place, saying it was too late and dangerous.
This place was right across from her best friend Cali’s apartment.
Cali had wanted her to move in with her, but Gemma felt that even with close friends, you needed your own space. So, she rented the apartment across the street.
She could’ve just bought a place, but since she wasn’t officially divorced yet, there could be issues with dividing assets, so she decided to hold off.
tomorrow.”
“See you to
She waved at Brian as she got out of the car.
Brian smiled softly. “See you tomorrow.
As soon as the car turned the corner, Gemma began walking upstairs. But before she’d taken more than a few steps, someone suddenly rushed up to her.
Her wrist was grabbed tightly.
She couldn’t break free.
Her heart jumped into her throat, and a wave of terror shot through her body like an electric shock.
Every muscle in her body trembled.
Her mind went blank, and all she could feel was endless panic.
“Help”
She tried to struggle, but the grip was like a vice.
She remembered scenes from robberies she’d seen on the news. Her breathing became erratic, and her heartbeat thundered In her ears. Sweat broke out on her back.
“It’s mel
Hearing that familiar voice was like being pulled back from the edge of a nightmare.
“Marcus? Let go of me!”
“Heh, I’m your husband. You want me to let go? And then go get all cozy with some other guy?”
“Let go of mel”

“Answer me first–what’s your relationship with him?”
Gemma winced in pain. “He’s a colleague. And we’re in the middle of a divorce. If you keep this up, I can file charges for intentional harm!”
Marcus finally let go.

But his tone was colder than before.
“Wow, you’ve really learned some new tricks. If I weren’t here, would you have brought that guy home?”
“That’s none of your business!” Gemma took a few steps back, trying to find an opening to run back inside
Marcus laughed out. “You really think you’re some young thing, don’t you?”
“After we’re divorced, who would still want you?”
“He’s only after you because of the twenty million I gave you.”
Gemma shot back, “Well, if he’s after money, he’s in luck. I’ve got plenty.”
Marcus froze for a second.

Not long ago, they’d argued.
Gemma had said the women outside only wanted him for his money–Wilson’s money.
He had responded the same way.
He’d seen the deep disappointment in her eyes, but at the time, he hadn’t realized his mistake.
Instead, he kept mocking her.
“Unlike some people, who pretend they don’t care about money, but want so much more. They’re worse than the ones outside.”
“At least those people wear their ambitions on their faces. But some people… you can’t figure them out‘
Back then, it had all been said in anger, but it wasn’t just empty words.
Gemma married him because Wilson’s people believed that someone whose birth chart matched his could restore his sight.
Marcus had planned that if she didn’t want him, he’d just pay her off and pretend the whole thing had never happened. But Gemma had never complained. She’d diligently cared for him, even after his sight returned.
And now, after all these years, Marcus realized she had sacrificed so much for someone she barely knew.
How could she have done all that without wanting something in return?
But after trying to figure her out several times and getting nowhere, he’d started to feel like she was a mystery, impossible to
read.
Now, Gemma stepped forward, delivering the weight of every past hurt with each word. “Unlike some people, who you can never tell what they’re thinking. That’s the real danger.”
Her words came out slow, deliberate, each one a hammer hitting his heart.
Marcus’s expression shifted, and his heart tightened with a new kind of panic. Because Gemma’s eyes had changed.
She used to look at him with soft, trusting eyes.
But now, her gaze was sharp and detached, like she didn’t care anymore.
He felt like he’d lost something, and that realization hit him harder than any blow.
“You never used to make such a scene. What’s different this time?”
“Mr. Wilson, don’t you get it? We’re getting a divorce. This isn’t some game.”
Gemma saw his emotions start to unravel. He was no longer paying attention to her, so she dashed for the stairs.
Marcus reacted fast, grabbing her just before she could escape.
“Alright, let’s not talk about that now, Let’s talk about Ali.”

“He really needs you.”
Gemma stopped and turned. “What did you say after you got the food I sent over today?”
Marcus was taken aback, speechless.
“You’re definitely better at taking care of him. The past is the past.”
“You’re only willing to let things go because you haven’t been the one wronged.”
“Besides, Ali chose to stay with you. He’ll probably have a new mom soon. Mr. Wilson, you can hang in there a little longer. You’ll probably find a better manny soon enough, right?”
The elevator doors opened, and Gemma quickly stepped inside, closing the doors behind her.
Marcus stood frozen, not following.
About half an hour later, he seemed to realize something and immediately drove back home.
Since Gemma had moved out, nothing had changed in the room.
He rushed upstairs, entered the bedroom, and opened Gemma’s drawer.
Sure enough, her wedding ring was inside.
Because of his blindness, they never had a proper wedding, and apart from their marriage certificate, the ring was the only symbol of their relationship.
As a doctor, Gemma couldn’t wear the ring at work, so she kept it in her pocket or hung it around her neck.
She never left it behind,
Now…
She didn’t want it anymore.
At that moment, Marcus realized the divorce was real. It wasn’t some stunt
