Chapter 35 – Vanishing Act
Emerson’s POV
Eric leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing as he spoke with a serious tone. “Emerson, do you even realize how dangerous today was? Isabel could’ve gone into anaphylactic shock. You were lucky she didn’t, but luck won’t always be on your side. You need to be carefu tot just with her health, but with everything. What are you going to do with this relationship?”
His words cut through the haze in my mind. I hadn’t been thinking clearly. And now, sitting in Eric’s office, I was forced to confront the reality of what had happened. I couldn’t shake the image of Isabel’s pale face. Her body, limp and unresponsive in my arms. It haunted me, gnawing at my thoughts.
I clenched my jaw, trying to push down the surge of frustration that welled up within me. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen,” I said, my voice rough. “I… I just want to protect her.”

Eric sighed, leaning forward, his elbows resting on the desk. “Protect her? From what? From yourself? From the mess this relationship hast become? And what about Lilith? Does she know about any of this?”
He had been a close friend for years and knew when I needed firm redirection. But today, his words were hard to take. A part of me knew he was right, but I wasn’t ready to admit it.
“Listen, Eric, I… I don’t know what I want right now,” I said honestly. “All I know is that I need to take care of Isabel. I must find out what’s going on with her. She’s looking weak and pale. She’s losing hair and losing weight. I have a bad feeling about it. That’s why I was asking the personnel to examine her while she’s still unconscious. Otherwise she’d never let me.”
Eric stared at me over his reading glasses. His piercing eyes seemed to

look right through me. “Emerson, you can’t keep her locked up and expect everything to be fine. She’s an adult. She’s not even your wife anymore. She has a right to her own choices. You need to figure out what you really want, Emerson, before it’s too late.”
He was right. I was knee deep in a mess I had created myself. Before 1 could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the room.
A young nurse peeked her head In, looking frazzled. “Dr. Eric, Mr. Williams, I’m sorry to interrupt, but… We can’t find Isabel.”
My heart sank. “What do you mean, you can’t find her?” I asked, standing up so abruptly that my chair toppled over behind me.
The nurse flinched, her eyes wide with fear. “She’s not in her room. We’ve searched the nearby areas, but there’s no sign of her.”

Panic surged through me, overriding any coherent thought. “Emerson,” Eric tried to calm me. But before he could say another word, I bolted out of his office.
My mind raced as I retraced my steps back to Isabel’s ward. The room. was empty. The bed was neatly made, as if she had never been there at
all.
“Isabel!” I called out with an exasperated sigh. That woman kept on slipping through my fingers and getting in trouble. Where could she have gone?
I tore down the hallway, my pulse pounding in my ears. As I rounded a corner, I caught snippets of conversation from a group of young nurses. chatting nearby.

“Did you see Robert earlier? He’s so handsome in his new doctor’s uniform.”
“I know, right? I heard he was helping someone in the emergency ward.”
