Chapter 103
Not wanting to listen to Xavier anymore, Yvette slammed her cutlery on the table. “I’m full.” She stood up and started to walk away.

Only then did Xavier realize that she was mad. He quickly got up and grabbed her wrist. “Why are your angry?” he asked.
Yvette pulled her hand away. “I’m not angry. Mr. Lane, you’re absolutely right. My friend and I are the ones who lack skills. Otherwise, your people wouldn’t have been able to throw her in jail for a day.”
Clearly, she was angry.
Xavier had to lower his pride and explain, “I didn’t know that the lawyer Daphne had mentioned was your friend.”
Yvette listened in silence.
For the first time,
or was
at a loss for what to do. He could only try to placate her. “Tell me how I can make up for her being locked up. Should I have someone apologize to her?”
Yvette was surprised to hear this but didn’t get a chance to respond as a cough came from the door.
Mark was standing there with shock written all over his face.
The air around Xavier instantly became tense. “Why are you still here?”
“Mr. Lane, I came to see if there was anything else you needed,” Mark replied as he stood there awkwardly.
When Yvette had been around, she had handled all of Xavier’s personal affairs. But all the
responsibilities had fallen on Mark’s shoulders when she had left.
That was when Mark had discovered how difficult Xavier was to deal with privately.
Even the timing of when Xavier’s breakfast was delivered to him could tick him off. Mark would also get scolded if Xavier’s clothes weren’t arranged as per his requirements.
Once, Xavier had thrown a fit and fired the catering staff just because the milk hadn’t been at the
correct temperature.
Because of this, many part–time workers had chosen to quit rather than endure the stress of working under Xavier, despite the good pay.
As Xavier’s personal assistant, Mark had had no choice but to take care of everything himself.
Taking on these duties had made Mark realize just how extraordinarily patient and tolerant Yvette had been with Xavier’s eccentric demande
Over the years, he had never heard Xavier complain about how
Yvette handled the household affairs.
Now, it was the first time Mark had seen Xavier trying to appease someone.
“You don’t need to come here anymore,” Xavier said abruptly.

Mark was s stunned. “Mr. Lane, I will work harder to improve.” He had diligently worked beside Xavier for nearly ten years. Was he going to be dismissed over such a small matter?
“I meant you should focus on your main duties and stop coming to Dewberry Manor every day.”
Mark let out a sigh of relief. “Yes, sir.”
As he was about to leave, Xavier called him outside. “How is the kid?” he asked.
“He’s been well–behaved since last night. The housekeeper says he’s very independent–he can wash up and change clothes on his own.” Mark paused briefly. “He even asked when you would come to see him, sir.”
Xavier’s expression became conflicted. “You should go back to the office now.” As he spoke, he couldn’t help but cough heavily.
“Mr. Lane, should I get your private doctor to come and check on you?” Mark noticed that Xavier had been looking unwell and coughing a lot recently.
“No need; I’m fine,” Xavier replied, glancing at Yvette’s back as he stood outside.
“Mr. Lane.” Mark couldn’t help but suggest, “You should let Ms. Snyder know if you like her. Otherwise, she might never understand your feelings.”
“My personal affairs are none of your business, Xavier retorted.
Mark’s eyes behind his gold–rimmed glasses dimmed at the realization that he had overstepped.
