Chapter 187 Her Good Friend
“What else do we have to talk about?”
“I like you.” Josiah turned slightly to face her directly, as if this made him appear more serious. His tone grew a little more solemn. “Lysander, I want to be with you. I know you have other suitors right now, but I won’t give up. At the very least, I want to compete with him fairly.”
Lysander asked, “Are you casting your fiancée aside?”
“You’re well aware of what happened with my grandmother, my mother, and the company. Everything there was between Lysanne and I have been completely wiped out. The only reason I’m agreeing now is because Mrs. Thorne has threatened me with her life.”
“Have you ever considered that if she finds out about your ongoing entanglement with your ex–wife behind her daughter’s back, she would still threaten you with her life?”
“No, Lysanne can’t have children anymore. Their only wish is for me to take care of her for the rest of her life. As for the possibility of other women in my life, they’re already prepared for that.”
“So? If you’re Lysanne’s husband in public, so what does that make me? A secret lover? Or a homewrecker?”
Flustered, Josiah firmly grasped her shoulders. “Of course not! I won’t register my marriage with Lysanne, it’s just a show to put Mrs. Thorne at ease…”
“Enough!” Lysander forcefully pushed him away. “Josiah, who do you think you are? Do you think I can’t live without understand? What makes you think I would abandon my dignity for you?”
ou Don’t forget, our marriage wasn’t built on love! In other words, I’ve never loved you, do you
Chapter 187 Her Good Friend
Josiah was left somewhat dazed by her outburst, his gaze flickering. “You don’t love me? Then who do you love? That childhood friend of yours who is nearly thirty and hasn’t achieved anything
“The standards of ordinary people like us aren’t the same as yours. To you, Zachary might seem like an underachiever, but in my parents‘ eyes, he’s a man with a stable job and exceptional character.”
Josiah slightly furrowed his brows, “Have your parents already given their blessing for you two to be together? Do you love him?”
“Does love really matter? When I married you, I didn’t love you either. On the contrary, he and I are from the same social class and have comparable incomes, while our parents have been friends for decades. Being with him guarantees a stable and secure future, a life I can foresee, and that’s the life I desire.”
Just as Josiah was about to say something, his gaze suddenly shifted upward, looking out the window.
Having smoked in the car earlier, he had rolled down the windows to let out the smoke. Thus, their conversation was clearly audible from outside.
Zachary had come over without them realizing, standing outside when he heard Lysander’s words, which left him somewhat stunned.
He glanced at Lysander, then at Josiah, hesitating before he finally spoke. “Lysander, you left your wallet in my car.”
After opening the door, Lysander stepped out of the car and took the wallet. “Thank you.”
“No worries. Luckily, it fell in my car. Just be a bit more careful in the future. If it fell in someone else’s car, you might not be able to get it back.”
Josiah furrowed his brows. On the surface, the words seemed like a well–intentioned warning. However, Lysander had just stepped out of his car. Given the situation and setting, those words sounded nothing short of a provocation to him.
He too opened the car door and stepped out, walking up to Zachary. He stood firm before the latter. “Hello, Mr. Powell. I’m Lysander’s husband, Josiah.”
Lysander corrected him, “Ex–husband.”
Zachary laughed lightly. “Hello, Mr. Guerra. I’m Lysander’s… friend.”
Josiah raised an eyebrow, his gaze shifting back and forth between the two of them. “Friends?” he questioned.
“Indeed, good friends, very good friends.”
The color drained from Josiah’s face in an instant.
